I was curious where IS works and if they go to sea regularly or are land based for the most part?

Land based for the most part, one of the least sea going ratings.

Thanks.

If that is the case, than where would I expect to be stationed if I became an IS?

From the Go coast guard website...

These specialists are stationed throughout the Coast Guard, with most typically located at the Intelligence Coordination Center, maritime intelligence fusion centers, cryptologic units and field intelligence support teams.

Fusion centers (there are 2) are in Alameda, CA and Virginia Beach, VA

ICC is in the DC area

Field Intel Support Teams (now called sector intelligence staffs) are located at CG SECTORS. There are lots of them, hit the CG home page or google to find locations.

Hope this helps.

The new RFMC is all about getting sea billets. However, everything as far as billets is slow. I am going to try and get sea billets, but do not expect anything in the next 3 years as that is how long the process takes at a minimum for getting new billets.

There are about 20 sea-going IS's stationed in Texas at the Cryptologic center; however, they get underway with the Navy right now, not on Coast Guard cutters as of yet.

Has anybody heard when are the u/w billets coming online. I know the process takes a couple of years but perhaps by 2011 we will have them?

My cutter is expecting an ME1, it has caused alot of problems with where everyone will sleep, add an IS and we will be "hot racking" it, if I were an IS I would rather get u/w with the Navy newer ships, much better technology and equipment to work with, and in my opinion which is only an opinion being a coastie on a navy ship you probably get treated really well, I am sure the skipper doesnt want you going back and telling everyone the navy guys treated you like dirt, especially considering they cant do LE without us onboard.
