Currently an OS1 at FIST Phila and I have a young FN intrested in going IS. I'm just looking for some information pertaining to "A" school and what to expect. So in my travels of information gathering I figured I'd tap into this resource. Any information to better prepare me to mentor the young non-rate would be great. Thanks.

More details will be announced by ALCOAST, but the process will likely be very similar to a change in rating at any other time. First thing, you must QUALIFY for the rating. In the case of IS, you would have to be able to become eligible for a TS/SCI clearance. If you would want to LATERAL, ie, 'poof you are an ISx,' then you would need to EARN that. You would have to proove that you have the skill sets of an IS at that paygrade. The best way to proove that would be to get those EPQs signed off. If relevant, also take the EOCTs for that grade. (For anything above E-4, that means UP to and including the grade which you desire). If you want to go to IS-A School, or are not qualified as above, you will HAVE to go to A-School. Once you meet the minimums, then there must be space for you.
