I am getting ready to reaffiliate with the USNR in the next few weeks and I have some questions in my head regarding the Inactive LDO\CWO accession program, particular to my military *ahem* career. I guess I would fall under the heading of "broken service" if there is such a thing for Reservists. I was AD 88-92 as an OS, IRR 92-96, then I was a Reservist from 2001-2004 as an IT. I did not re-enlist at my 2004 end of service knowing that with my major life change (moving across country, new job, etc), I might not have been able to fullfill an obligation to the best of my ability. I am finally settled and feel that I would like to complete my service and attain my Navy goals.
My plan at this point is to take the next couple of years and make the most of them professionally regarding the Reserves, in order to be able to put together the best package I can for LDO\CWO. I am slated to be drilling in Newport in close proximity to the NWC and other schools, so I am sure I will have a TON of resources as far as people with information regarding LDO\CWO. My questions at this point surround perception, for the most part. If I choose to attempt the LDO\CWO path, will I be taken seriously or would it be a waste of the USNR's time? Are there any regs regarding broken service such as mine for the program, that I have not been able to find? I have done some pretty extensive searching internet-wise but I haven't come across anything yet. Anyone in the know have any insight? I can speculate all day and I can wait to hunt down the right people in a few weeks at Newport, but I thought I might be able to get some good info from some of the sharp cookies around here in the mean time! |

It's not going to be a waste of your time to at least try. The worst thing the board can do is not select you.
It's hard to say what the perception of the board will be. There may be some who see your history as negative, while others may place more weight on what you did while you were in. But the reality is that your service history isn't bad. You did your 8 year committment, decided to try the drilling reserves, then got out. You can always provide an explination for your break in service in the personal statement of your package, as can your CO in his statement. There are no regs for broken service that apply to LDO. Just make sure you meet the minimum paygrade & time in service requirements to make sure you are eligible to apply for these programs. Good luck! |

Thanks Michael, I appreciate the info and the input. I am potentially reaffiliating as an IT1 (DPEP) and am slated for a billet with ONI. I am as giddy as a school kid to be getting back to serving in the reserves and affiliated with the Intel community.
I was with SPAWAR at my last command and it was a blast... worst thing I did was not re-enlist in 04 but circumstances and my lack of knowledge on tranferring units prevailed. I was amazed at how difficult it has been to get back in and being 39 has been no help! GO NAVY! |
