It is both common and likely that you will deployed at least once during the 6 year committment. Of course, it depends on the needs of the Navy, what your job is, etc. We are in a long and protracted war on terror. This may not end any time in the near future. Given the recent bombing of the US Embassy in Yemen, I'd say we will be committed for a very long time.
Where you get deployed and for how long is also quite variable.
There may also be opportunities for you to volunteer to go active duty for temporary work.
Good Luck to you in your decision. Ask all your questions...you are in the right place.
There is no guarantee that you will deploy, it is just a possibility. The purpose of the Navy Reserve or other reserve and National Guard components is to support the active duty components. I can certainly understand if you are not in a position to serve at this point in time. Maybe in the future...
I assume by the way you said "their father", instead of my husband, you and him are not married, so youre a single mother? Deployments are something every reservist should count on.
And unlike active duty, many times these deployments are last minute and you dont have much time to plan.
You do get more pay if you are active duty, but dont join the military for money, they dont pay much.
Is there a list I can look at for the different ratings that are more likely to have the opportunity to volunteer for tar ? if so will you give me the website ? if the active duty falls thru i want to join the reserves and try for tar or fts and can you enlighten me more on the fts? can you get that if you don't get offered active duty ? thanks.
You are all over the place. Which is it Active Duty or Reserves? To research FTS (not TAR anymore) go to the NPC website. Most of the ratings are over manned so you might not get the rating you want. If you are looking to be FTS you can either talk to the classifier at MEPS (if you are choosing active duty) to see if there is an opening or once you are in the Reserves you can put in a package to be recalled to active duty under the FTS program. It's not a guarantee that you will get FTS as a Reservist because people are chosen by a board.
