I know this designation is relatively new. What do they actually do? I know Intel and IW are a bit above that one, but IP sounds interesting. I wonder if we have any IP's in here, please share your experience. What is it that you guys do on a daily basis? Infrastructure design and architecture? Unix or mainframe administration? Server farm deployment? HA? DR? Where do they fit in the Navy backbone?
I have the exact same queston. My recruiter has set me up with a couple of interviews with IP O-6's next month as part of my DCO package. That's one of the things that I was hoping to get answered. As you are well aware, it is difficult to get information about the IP community since it is so small (and new).
bkln, great questions! Are you applying for a DCO spot in the IP community? I'm also in the process of getting my DCO package ready for IP. Still getting various materials together and to my recruiter. I believe that he's currently working on scheduling my interviews.
Neph, you'll have to let us know how your interviews went, and what's involved.
Yes, I'm in the very early stages of getting it all together. Based on my recruiter advise my "best shot" is IP (10+ years of Unix admin, doing infrastructure architecture now)however, I would still like to find out more and possibly to talk to someone who is already doing this job. I have one IP contact but the guy is very busy and it's hard to get hold of him, I will keep trying and will let you know as soon as I hear anything new. Please share anything you know about this
Yes, I'm also new to the scene, so not very helpful in terms of information. But I'm glad to be able to hook up with some other folks going for the IP community.
I'll post stuff as I learn it, but I expect it to be a very long process.
GoNavy, Not yet, I'm trying to find out if my local NOSC centers have these billets open. I'm relatively close to 3 centers: Bronx, NY Albany, NY Plainville, CT I'm willing to travel more than normal if I find the right NOSC the probem is finding it :-) How about you?

Regards,
There is a SPAWAR unit in New London. They are overmanned, but as a new Enisgn they will probably look the other way since you should be with other 1605s when you are just starting out.
Originally posted by GoNavy_BeatArmy: UndexLT, are you aware of any available billets in the PA/MD/Northern VA area?
Your best bet is probably the NOSC at Naval Air Facility Washington (located on Andrews AFB). They used to have several units that were 1605-centric. Keep in mind also that where the unit drills is more important than what NOSC you are assigned to. I've never drilled at the NOSC myself, always been at the gaining command anywhere from 2 miles to 35 miles away.
I have officially submitted my package through my recruiter for 03/10/08 IP Board, I think they are doing Intel/IW/IP together. I was told that the deadline is 02/25/08 I guess they want to take a good look at it way before they meet. Where do you stand with your paperwork, already submitted or just about to wrap-up? Do you know how many of IP candidates will be out there? I wonder how many they can get in this time, I think I will be the first one from NY, my recruiter didn't remember any IP before me. If the number is relatively small, can they get them all in?
I am new to this forum. I am interested in Intelligence and MSC. What is IP? Anyone have a link with more info? I could not find it on the Navy site. Thanks
1600 and 1605 are the designators for active duty and reserve (respectively) for an Information Professional Officer. Created in 2004 and available for the reserve component in 2007. Information Professional Community is responsible for offensive and defensive Navy information operations to support requirements of theatre and operational commanders and national policy makers. They provide expertise in information, command and control, and space systems through the planning, acquisition, operation, maintenance, and security of systems that support Navy operational and business processes. Presently, there are billets for 535 officers. Basically what it means (as far as I understand) those guys are responsible for Infrastructure Architecture and Management, e.g servers, network equipment, security standards, etc. Anything that has to do with secure information distribution within US Navy backbone, they are your "go to" guys. US Navy started to recognize the need for the control of the information as another weapons system and I think thay are on the right track. It is a new kid on the block but it will not take a long time for this designator to gain the recognition for the job they will perform in the 21st century US Navy. IMHO it is "hot" area to be involved in. Just my 2 cents
My apologizes, I haven't been on the boards in awhile. I got my package in on Monday (2/25), just in time, after running around trying to get some documents that I didn't realize were required.
At this point, I guess it's just "hurry up and wait". I'm not sure how many spots are open for how many applicants. Have you heard anything? I believe my recruiter has 2 or 3 other applicants for IP from the Baltimore area.
At any rate, good luck to everyone that is submitting application packages!
