Depends on how hard charging you are. If you just want to do your drills and 2 week AT, you can just sit at your NOSC and do nothing. If you want to actually do something, you can eat up your IDT/IDTT (drill days) by volunteering for work. For example, You can do ship inspections, research, and all kids of projects. This is what I end up doing... I am attached to Diving and salvage, so I ended up supporting a submarine salvage this summer as well as the working diver's conference. That blew about 6 months of drill right there. They also have Web training you can do at home, which blew another 3 months of drill. Then the rest of the drills were admin stuff at the NOSC. This year I am blowing Drill days at NEDU for research, a nice trip doing inspections to Guam, and drilling with the USCG a couple of times. I plan on only going to the NOSC 3 times for PRT and a Dining Out.
As for the AT part...as an EDO the next 4-5 yrs are pretty much planned out for you. DCO school, At seat tour, Industrial Tour, EDO school, etc... You can always do extra AT/ADT. There are some great opportunities out there. For that sub salvage, I ended up mixing IDTT and ADT.
At sea tour? That sounds cool, what would this duty consist of?
Also, do reserve EDOs qualify to participate in the ED Dolphin program? The information sheet on the NPC website (http://www.npc.navy.mil/Officer/Pers44/EngineeringDuty/CareerInformation/) states it's open for designators 144X and 146X. Theoretically then, an officer with a designator of 1445 would qualify for the program (the 5 indicating reserve status).

When I was thinking about a LatXfer to EDO several years ago I inquired into the ED Dolphins. I was told by a CDR at NAVSEA that yes reservists are eligible, but that the time requirement is so extensive that in reality it is very difficult for anyone with a real job to do it.
The At Sea Tour has a bunch of watches that you need to stand, as well as orientation with the Engineering, weapons, CIC systems, etc. You can choose what type of ship or sub you want to go on. Yes, we do get to qualify for the ED dolphin program. UndexLT hit it right on the nail though. It is a big time commitment. You can get assigned to a sub station and get some of your quals done while in port for your drills but a lot of time underway is needed to get signed of on the other proficiencies. I only know of one guy going through it now. I know a couple of guys that have gotten their SWO pins though. That is another big time commitment but achievable between 3-6 years. Again, lots of time catching rides with a ship. I have to add a plug for my specific community though....ED Diver is a sweet gig...Keeps you in shape and you are never bored! That's me and the Russian Sub we raised this summer. Here is the site with some more pics http://www.juliett484.org/juliett/index.html
A lot would also depend on where you are assigned.
My last hard billet the unit CO was a Submarine EDO that worked for the Energy Dept. as a civilian - we handled ordnance. The one before him was an F/A-18 pilot that was also a laid-off airline pilot working for an FAA contractor.
I was in an EOD unit that had an engineering LDO as the Admin Officer - he was able to do some work in his designator by pulling an occasional tour at a shipyard.
Working as an Engineering Duty Diver sounds awesome. I am looking to serve to get out from behind a desk every once in a while, among other (bigger) reasons.
I am submitting my packet for EDO as soon as all the pieces are there.
Any idea of the demand / competetiveness for EDOs?

I Put in my kit for EDO in early May. No word on the boards yet. Have you heard anything?
As info, I am in NJ, and there is an EDO drilling unit near me in DE. The WO in the unit I will join told me he has spent his last 4 AT's at Pearl, working on ships. I also saw an article on Navy.mil recently where Reserve EDOs managed the conversion of the first two Ohio class SSBNs to the new SSGN configuration. Pretty cool stuff.
Yes, it's the reserve unit in Wilminton. Falls under NAVSEA. My XO was telling me when I get in, still waiting on the boards, that I would be able to do extra duty at the Washington Navy Yard (NAVSEA) on projects for the fleet. Or what ever else the Navy needs me to do.
I'm pretty stoked about doing work for the fleet. I do similar work for the Army COE as a civilian, maintaining the USACE fleet and building new boats for the Army.
Good stuff! I wish you luck in your boards. Like to touch base with you over a beer(s) and an Eagles game when you hear something on your packet - I'm in the Wilm area myself. I take it your NOSC is the one on Kirkwood Hwy.
Thought I'd bring this thread back to life if possible. I just completed my EDO packet and sent it into my recruiter who is out of Groton, CT. Just curious if anyone else is wrapping theirs up around now too.
I finished my Kit back in May, and just missed the last board that was in April.
We are all still waiting on the board to conviene, and I have not heard from my recuriter since the beginning of the new FY (e.g. 1 October)
I'm is south Jersey by the way. Are you prior service? I believe there were three of us before you finished your kit, so now there may be 4 candidates, so hopefully we will all here something soon. Good Luck.
I'm currently a civilian looking to get into the USNR up in Boston. I haven't heard anything from my recruiter since I turned in my packet. I've left him a couple e-mails and a voicemail the other day after work. Perhaps I'll try his office during regular business hours.
I think I may have been the only EDO applicant up here, but I'll have to ask him when I talk to him next. I'll keep this post updated as I hear back.
Well, I just heard from my recruiter, I did not get selected by the Board this go-round. I thought for sure I'm in, Prior service - PE, Project Manager in marine engineering for the Army, perfect fit, or so I thought.
He's going to try to find out why I was not selected. Anybody else find out anything yet?
SSN697Jim, Sorry you didn't get picked up. The EDO community just went through a massive "active integration" reorganization. They cleaned house and tossed about 66 or so officers in the VTU, pretty much booting them out. We were recently restricted in only occupying EDO billets, which narrowed the amount of billets available to us. Hence, the cutting of manpower. Your quals look great. The only reason I can think of for you not getting picked up is because of our restructuring. All the billets got finalized OCT1 and everyone is in the process of transferring. I would assume that once the house is all in order, the Board will start to bring in new folks into the community.
Thanks LT. Thats pretty much what the XO of the EDO unit I will be drilling with in DE told me. He told me during my interviews that the Navy was dumping a bunch of senior officers to make the EDO community more 1 to 1 active to reserves. In the mean time, I'll wait for the next board and I am also applying to the Naval Postgraduate School to start my MSME. I'm an ex Nuke MM2(SS).
The senior project officer I interviewed with in this unit told me the same thing pretty much.
I think there were 4 of us who were applying, and I figured they were probably taking one at a time. Good ole "hurry up and wait" I waited this long to get my commission after high school in 1990, 2 years of college, 6 years as a blue shirt, another 5 years of night school, and 4 more to get the PE, what's another 6 months. Needs of the Navy.
Here's one more, I'm interested in ED Dolphin too. Since I already haave my silver dolphins from serving in LA class boats, would it be as difficult for me as someone with no nuclear training or sub experience before? I have looked through the ED dolphin check list, and much of it looks very familiar from when I earned my dolphins. UndexLT or Kefe, any thoughts Sirs.
