I am currently planning to enlist under a security forces contract but am not quite sure that is what I want to do as far as MOS. I am some what interested in intel. I do want to be a Marine but I can't seem to put my finger on what exactly I am interested in doing in the Marines.
So, my question is, with a 95 on the ASVAB and a 134 GT would it be crazy to enlist under an open contract? Also, for you Marines who are 03xxx, what was the hardest part of SOI? Thanks alot! Thomas |

Its not hard at all. The hardest thing was figuring out why all the chicks in Oceanside didn't want to get with a fresh Pvt outta boot, especially when I had all the USMC apparel on. Go figure. |

No...It isn't crazy as long as you understand that Open means OPEN.
I did the Open Contract thing back in '85 and despite all the horror stories (and these are almost always posted as second hand stories of "I heard of a guy" or "In the last series at boot before mine..." etc.) I didn't become a cook. I ended up as a Korean Linguist and it turned out to be a great job. |

You must not have been sporting that red satin jacket - the one with the patches on the sleeve of all the places you've been (which, up to SOI, is usually just one lonely patch that says "MCRD"). That and a pair of BC glasses will get you all the chicks you can handle. |

Did Recruiter give you any options? Your GT is quite good to be a 03 walks alot. I went open in 1976, I was 0341(Mortars) had Seaduty and was Sensors in STA. Your smarts will stay with you, if you want to play grunt for a tour, it can be fun and a challenge. Ask around some more and do some research on the Web, learn Mil terms and try to understand each MOS role. No matter, a US Marine you will be, like it or not. Good Luck |

Your initial contract will be open but you most likely will not ship on an open contract.
Some units are putting people on open contracts until all the tests from meps come back. Security forces is basically a slightly higher speed guard duty.Unless of course you get FAST Co. and only a few do. After 18 months on Se. Foces you go back to the Infantry, and try to remember all the stuff you forgot but now need to know. |

Not everybody that goes security forces, actually goes to the school.
Quite a few are OJT. Of the 20 of us that checked in at GTMO, none of us were school trained other than Infantry. When orders were handed out at SOI, 1/3 of the company were going security forces and only 12 went on to Sec. Forces schooling. |

How are they considered Security Forces when they don't have the 8152 or 8154 MOS? When did you go to SOI? |

Went to SOI in '91. They still do the same thing these days with Sec. Forces. Some sec force detachments do not require school training in the eyes of the monitors. You can work in mos's in the Corps and not be school trained in them. In fact it used to only take 6 months to get OJT certifications in a lot of mos's. |
