Congradulations on raising a person who is not afraid to work hard at achieving their goals. That not only speaks well of your son or daughter, it also speaks well of you. At this point you have two choices: you can either embrace their desire to make something of themselves or reject their notion of personal growth.
For those of you who don't know us, we're not the stereotypes you've seen in the movies. Quite actually, we're really not all that different from you. We just wanted to face great challenges to earn the Title of Marine and then live a lifestyle based on unity in dedication to great cause. What more noble act can any human being ever give to another than putting themselves on the line in defense of another's cause for freedom?
Do you realize how much we Marines actually hate war or how much we detest pulling the trigger to take another human being's life? While no rational person ever likes that insanity, someone has to step up otherwise any tyrant who can put a group of armed thugs together can dictate their will over families who just want to live in peace as they raise their children and grow old gracefully with their grand children.
Sound corny? Maybe foolish when there are less risky ways to live? How about stupid because a lot of people are making a lot of money while we endure hardships trying to live our beliefs? Not to us. We believe we're moral people of good conscious who'd rather do something rather than sit back and do nothing which is why we make the six o'clock news instead of watching it.
This is why I'm congradulating you on raising someone who feels cause is infintely more important than comfort or personal gain. So the next time you question why your son or daughter is enlisting to earn the Title of United States Marine, look in the mirror and you'll see why because "Oz never gave anything to the Tinman that he didn't already have."
For anyone who still disagrees, keep an open mind and don't be surprised when your attitude changes when you see your son or daughter graduate from boot camp. And if you ever feel worried while they're serving, join the club because we Marines ALWAYS worry too until our last American Servicemember comes home. You see, we're not just a Service, we're a family. Thats why we're The Marines.

If you don't mind i'm going to print this out and give it to my ma. i shall join your ranks as a United States Marine soon enough. Cheers -Lewis
Please do Iron. I wrote it specifically for her and all the other parents who have doubts, fears or reservations about you and the others who are signing on. As a parent myself, I totally understand where they're coming from.
Glad you made the choice Little Brother. I'm proud you're stepping up and would troop with you anytime. Semper Fi is not just two words or an abstract concept, it's our warrior way of life. Semper Fi!

Thank you for writing that. I just sent it to my dad. He's so against me wanting to become a Marine (mostly because I'm a girl) that we can't even talk about the military anymore. I hope what you wrote will change his mind. Thanks again.
Anytime Thunder. If you reach a point where you think he may be ready, email me and I'll be happy to talk with him. Thats what we're here for. No one ever said being a Marine will be easy. It's a state of mind for people who choose to take action in living their beliefs. You're sticking to your choice and I'm proud of you for who you are as a human being, not what gender you were born to. Keep up the good work future Devil Dawg, I'd troop with you. Semper Fi!
Excellent Post. I'm a Mom who freaked out when my son said he was signing up. Now..I couldn't be more proud of him...and of all of the other brothers and sisters who serve. Wannabes who have reluctant parents, don't fret, we eventually come around. My son called me this morning to tell me he was deploying to the sand next month. He's passing up a good job that would make him non-deployable but he said that's what he trained for and why he joined so I respect that. Worried? yes. But I know he's doing what he wants to do.
bw78750: Good luck to your Son and please convey my best wishes for his safe return. He's a good man doing it right. Everytime someone blasts the younger generation I remind them they're the ones fighting for us in Iraq. That pretty much ends the conversation!
Marinegirl: Thanks for your support Little Sister. I'm glad to see you're still posting as it seems you're up against it and still not giving up on earning the Title. Well done.
Reserves08: Thanks for the heads up and good looking out Little Brother. This is how we keep eachother strong. While I do truly appreciate the respect, I'm still just Deano the Dinosaur or Deano or Deanosaur for short. Picked it up in boot, guess they liked the Flintstones. Although at my age now, Deano the Dinosaur sure seems very appropriate LMAO!!!
Good post. I've never met a Marine who isn't glad they did their time. I came from a family with very few military ties. My parents were initially very skeptical of the idea. Almost seven years later and I am still in, I have a little brother who just checked in at a west coast infantry unit and two other little brothers who are intent on joining. The Marine Corps made true believers out of my parents.
Yeh I also have a little brother who wants to join the Marines now...He wants to be just like his big sister! And to think he wanted to join the Army..
I am most definitely sending this to my Mom!! Thank you for the encouragement I'm sure I can speak for all of us when I say your support is really appreciated! Again Thank you!

Damn Good post Deano. Hope it helps a lot of the wannabes, but damn it man you put a tear in this old dogs eye as well. Good luck to all the young future Marines.
Wow outstanding post Deano, I seriously think this format should be used by recruiters for parents nationwide. It conveys exactly what we as a service stand for and what we're about.
