"The deadliest weapon in the world is a MARINE and his rifle!" GENERAL JOHN J. PERSHING--U.S.ARMY |
Congratulations!
Don't let the DI's know that your dad is a 1stSgt in the Corps! Just remember he is not Dad anyone..He is 1stSgt now!(LOL) Besides you grew up in a military type atomsphere and you are a little ahead now of the other recruits. Just continue to ask your 1stSgt (Dad) questions because you have a mentor now early in your early career of becoming a Marine. Don't try be exactly like your dad but do establish your own path. Honestly all you need in order to prepare for Boot Camp is to go there with a positive attitude! A positive attitude has gotten thousands of recruits to graduation day!

"It isn't the function of the government to keep the citizen from falling into error. It's the function of the citizen to keep the government from falling into error." R.H. Parker |
Drink water......lots and lots and lots of water. You are going to boot camp during the hottest time of the year on Parris Island.
Drink water....you will acclimate faster. A veteran - whether active duty, retired, National Guard or Reserve - is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of "up to and including my life." That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand that - Author unknown. |

Never refer to yourself as "I", or your Drill Instructors as "You", everything else is gonna get you on the radar anyway, so just accept it.

I was in 2001 - 2005. So I dont know how much has changed but couldnt be that much.
It is more than 10% physical, probably 100% physical and 100% mental. The first few days can drag your morale down. When I first got there I sat at a desk for hours and hours. We were up with no sleep for 2 or 3 days. Constant paperwork, medical, gear issue, frozen "Jimmy Dean" sandwiches, and we changed barracks 3 times too. So in the beginning you are physically and emotionally drained...and you havent even started training yet. Before you are released to your DIs you must complete the I.S.T. DO NOT FAIL or you will go to the PCP platoon. Its fairly simple and if I remember correctly you need 3 pull ups, 40 crunches, and I forgot the time on the mile and a half run. The biggest thing for me was I was always hungry and sleepy. Eating chow your feet must be at 90 degree angle, back straight, looking straight ahead, one hand ONLY using a utensil. You have to eat VERY QUICKLY because the DIs wil kick you out of the chow hall in 2 or 3 minutes after sitting down. Also I remember when we all went to the "learning center" you sit in what seemed like a school auditorium. Outside it was very cold but inside was very warm. You are very tempted to fall asleep and I admit I did once or twice. You are going to hve people who cannot handle the physical and emotional strain and they will try anything to get "dropped" from their platoon and sent home for a medical or mental reasons. Do not let these people drag you down. There are some legitimate medical issues with recruits but I found that 75% of them seemed to be faking or "milking" their injuries or illness. You will also see some of the same recruits on light duty all the time. I went in winter and you are going in the summer. The heat and humidity (sand fleas) will be brutal. Dont mean to sound negative but it is tough but you can make it!! If you need any specifics let me know. PS: One (if not the most) proudest moments of my life was walking across the parade deck and graduating. Its a great feeling. God Bless brother!! |

I don't have an attitude problem, you have a perception problem! |
+1,000,000!!!!!!!!! I left for bootcamp 28 July 92 and graduated in Oct... Jwalker, All I can say is that I was very glad to have grown up in south La because I was able to deal with heat/humidity a bit better. Others in my platoon had a hard time -- that, in addition to the bugs, are horrible during the summer months. Oh, DRINK MORE WATER... Good Luck |

I was at PI Jun-Sep...AT LEAST 4 days before you leave start drinking water like everyone said & do the stuff your recruiter said to do.
Something that helped me...I went by the PT schedule the recruiters told me and on top of that I walked 4 milesa day. I just walked 4 miles as fast as I could in a pair of go-fasters w/ a bottle of water. |

Best way to prepare for boot camp???
Sit down and have dinner with your folks. Take a long walk in a park with your girlfriend. Ride down the street in a car full of friends. Stand on a street and really see the people walking by. In short, live your youthful freedom to it's fullest now because very soon you'll be caught up in a change that truly lasts forever. Make lifelong memories as you live each day in the here and now because the future will be here very soon and everything will take care of itself then. Do you believe you will graduate boot camp and become a Marine? Then whats stopping you from living now??? |
