Well first they wanted to hav eRecon in their name then used the actual Marine Recon Jack Skull. and used a slightly different version of the Marine Recon motto

Be like changing an army unit like to say Special Forces Moter T or such and having a sheild with arrows sword and De Oppresso Liber on it. as their emblem.

I don't know, but I would have left the "deadly" in and scratched the "silent." So, I guess if those guys say they were "Recon" then they aren't posing?

A Cop told my wife once at a traffic stop he was Recon and well she pressed it a little and he was LAR.

I can't speak ill of them since I don't know any thing about them (after my time). However, I can say that operating out of a vehicle was about as far removed from my Recon as operating out of an SR-71.

I know vehicles might have been used for drop off and pick up, but not for Recon work itself. Not in my day.

Okay I'm awaiting ship to boot camp and my MOS is 03xx. I don't plan on attempting to do force recon anytime soon but I do have a question I'd like to ask about it. This may sound stupid but are recon Marines really as well trained as hollywood portrays them, at least to some extent? Could a force recon Marine take out like 3 or 4 people by themselves with just their hands? I'm just wondering if they are raelly trained to fight that well or if it's just a myth.

Hollywood always gets it wrong. We are better than that, In fact if Recon Marines were Gay, we would be only as good as Hollywood portrays.

Why don't you gather up 10 or 15 of your friends, go find a Force Recon Marine and find out for yourself.

Good luck.

Would someone explain when this all happened? When did LAR start considering themselves RECON? And I thought you had to be an 0321 to wear all that RECON stuff?

Another words even if you were Motor T and attached to 2nd RECON Bn...you still can not wear that stuff....right? cause you are not an 0321

***************************************************

You mean the entire H&S Company?

Because in my day there was not a Field Operator among them. ( although there were more than a few burnt out former Operators in H&S) Yet they were as much a member of 3rdRecon and the 3rdRecon Assoication (VN) as I was or I am.

I would guess 25% of our guys never or virtually never went on patrol. But everyone was part of the BN.

RECON stuff...or like that knockoff of Swift, Silent, Deadly at the beginning of this thread. I am not being specific enough.

I thought that to be considered RECON you had to be an 0321. That even if you are with H&S Co and a different MOS...Like Motor T or Admin that that does not count. I am just curious and was wondering if you guys could set me straight.

I was Battalion, not Force. I'll try to give you a serious answer.

I've trained with some of the best special operations units from around the world. In the end, it comes down to the individual human being and how much time they have, or decide to devote to fighting.

I was probably as physically fit and proficient as any one you've ever met. I was not a Billy bad *** with my hands and feet.

Some men I knew were indeed as bad, or badder, than Hollywood makes them out to be. But remember, Hollywood fights are choreographed to look good. If you want to see a more realistic view of what happens in real fights, just look at the professionals and world champion fighters. They don’t look anything like Hollywood.

When it comes down to combat (not sports), the idea is to remove or kill as quickly as possible, any way possible, regardless of how it looks. There is no “fair fight.” Rifles, pistols, knives, etc. are good inventions. If you can, use a radio and call in an air strike.

I trained to use many different systems and pieces of equipment. Hand to hand was not on the top of my personal list of things to become proficient at. The Corps taught me a thing or two, but if you think you will come out of the Corps as a cross between Jean Claude Van Dam, Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, Steven Segal, and Rambo, I wouldn’t count on it.

Here is my lesson for you: The Corps will not make you anything. It will help you make something of yourself. What that is depends on how much you put into it and how much of your free time you choose to devote to it. You will find civilians who never spent a day of their life in the military who can out-perform military men in many different fields because they make that field their sole profession.

That question made me curious.. does Recon train in MCMAP like the rest of the Marines, or do they train for hand to hand style combat differently?

I understand you said it wasnt a high priority of training, so this is just a curiousity question. Thank you very much.

You'll have to wait for one of the newer guys to answer. There was no MCMAP when I was in .

We had resident (in-house) black belts of different persuasions (HwaRangDo, TaeKwonDo, Shotokan, KungFu, etc.) train us when it came to martial arts. It was mostly on our free-time or for physical fitness, and not really organized through formal Marine Corps training.

Our formal training was more along the lines of knife fighting, underwater knife fighting, garrote (sp?) work, and general quick-kill stuff (throat punching, etc.) and stuff that didn't really involve "fighting" per se. We really tried to avoid fighting and the best way to do that is just kill the mother ****er before a fight could start.

A lot of it depends on the individual.

Me i practiced a lot of Martial arts including what was taught in the Marines, I loved it took much Martial arts a lot of guys in Recon do, a lot don't but here is something to also think about, most people in Recon are people that can fucntion under much pain, see a Recon screening test or RIP(Pre Recon School) or ARS(Recon School) and youl know what I mean, A man not afraid of pain is a dangerous thing.

I agree...but is that correct? You are not RECON unless you are an 0321?

That's the way I always understood it, back in my day. You could be *in* Recon, as in being in the Company, but that could support, hide and slide, etc. But you were not Recon unless you were 0321 +.
