It doesn't matter where you came from--its how you act as a Marine officer that determines whether or not your Marines will respect you. Treat them like men, let the NCOs do the training, LISTEN to the NCOs, get the platoon off in a timely manner whenever possible (i.e. don't keep them hanging around doing nothing just because you are still in the company office doing paperwork and all the other platoons are off), stick up for them when they can't do it themselves, etc., etc.
One of the biggest POS LTs I had was a mustang...and the best officer I've ever known was a grad from the USNA. Its all about YOU--not where you come from.
A very good point but do not take it out of context. If your NCO's are worth a shit they will be experienced and proficient in their MOS. They probably know more than you do. Let them teach you the tricks of the trade and take their advice for what it is worth.
However, do not allow them to control you, do not become passive. You are in command no matter how many pumps they have been on, and ultimately you make the decisions. Don't be immature about it and wield power like a hammer; but never let your Marines forget their place and purpose in serving.
More will be expected of you regardless of what college hatched you out.
I was a Mustang and the Marines respected that however they were judging me on the here and now not what I did as a boxkicker and training NCO.
Also you will be the butt of a lot of jokes since you'll be the greenest Lt. in mother's lean mean fighting machine! (And in some cases, greener than the most junior Marine in rank in the unit!) But it's all in good fun, so don't let that put you down.
