I am planning on attending college, and I want to enlist. I was wondering when I can attend Bootcamp. Can I do it during the summer, or should I skip a year of college to go to bootcamp? How does this work?

I am not sure what you want?? Do you want to enlist and become a Marine?? You mention college... do you want to become an officer??

It is not summer camp...to attend at your leisure and play gung-ho.

If you state what you want, maybe someone here can give you some guidance.

PS: there are many links to the top of this forum. I suggest you take the initiative and explore those... they may answer amany of your questions and avoid an ass-flaming by Marines on this forum.

If you want to enlist and continue with your college education, I highly suggest you ask your recruiter about the "Split Option Program" (aka, 92-Day Reservist). You leave for Boot Camp, return to school, drill with your reserve unit during the school session, and attend SOI and MOS school the following summer.

WARNING!
Reservist on split option are subject to mobilization for up to 24 months on active duty. School will have to be placed on hold until the needs of the Marine Corps are met. Your priority will be the Marine Corps followed by everything else dead last.

OMG HOLLYWOOD!!!!
What This is news To Me? Your telling me I can actually get sent to war in the Middle of the Semester? Before College is Done!?? No Way!! Next thing you are going to tell me I can't have a Beard because every Drill weekend I am expected to show up and looking like I am actually on active duty! Which means I actually have to cut my hair at least once a month. CRAP that recruiter lied to me. Mad Wink

Now that the Fun is over. You have Two options'
1. BombToaster As Hollywood said you can do the 92 day reservist. Go to Boot Camp during the Summer and MOS school the Next. Warning though if you do the 92 day reservist Contract you will be limited on what MOS's you can Choose. Obviously you can't do an MOS whose school is a year long. Also I know for a fact you cannot be a 0451 Rigger if you do the 92 day thing. Beacuse you can't do anything with the Chutes because you are not qualified for it. the Same is with Many other MOS's if have not completed the MOS's school you are not allowed to do anything. You run the risk of being stuck with MOS that can be OJT, like Infantry, Motor-T, and Admin. Lets say you are able to Pick an MOS Whose length is 4 months long. So you go to Boot Camp one summer, Go to school(during which you are not that useful to your unit and are limited on what you are allowed to do) and than go MOS school. Well you can do the Math, 4 months school 3 months summer. So you have to take a semester off and for 3 months you aren't doing anything school realated. The average MOS school length is between 2-5 months.

2. The other option is to take a Year off to go straight through that way you have your all of you options open, you are than also useful to your unit.

just to put it in perspective between Boot Camp, MCT, and MOS school you will have a minimum of 6 months of Training.

Here are some questions you need to ask yourself

1. Am I at the Begining, Middle, or End of my college Career?

2. Am I going to a Junior College or an actual four year school?

3. Do I Care what I do in the Marine Corps or do I just want to be a Marine?

4. Do I have enough Disciple to stop school totally and restart it back up?

5. Looking at the answers to the above questions
What to Me Seems to be the best Option for ME?

I hope you this is Help full. If need Any more clarification ask, and remember you are not the first to be in this situation, so use the search function. Good Luck what ever you decide.

I really appreciate everyone's replies. I would have replied sooner, but I'm having a little trouble with logging in.

Anyway, I might take a year of to complete Bootcamp.
