Hi, I recently went to MEPS, singed my contract and got sworn in and all. I was not completely sure on what MOS I wanted so my recruiter told me to do an open contract and we'll figure that out later. Bascially a few days ago he sat me down and listed all available jobs. Luckily the one I wanted was there so we sent a request for it. Just have some questions about that though.

Once he says I have the job, will it say it in writing so I know I definilty have the job?

Is there anyway I can still get some sort of bonus even though I didn't get one when I signed. A bonus isn't the reason I'm joining, just not bad to get money.

And does anyone know how long it will take for me to find out if I get the job or not?

Thanks.

If a bonus is not listed in your contract then your SOL. Open contract mean you will get what they give ya, that's as good as it gets......

If he sent a request and you are given a slot for the job, they should draw up a new contract specifying the garaunteed job field. I switched jobs while in DEP and they shredded the original contract and we signed a new one with the new job on it.

If you ship with open contract on the paperwork, then you get what you get and that's that.

90%+ of the people who have ever served in the Corps, didn't go in with a "guarantee".

I wonder how many Medal of Honor recepients had any sort of guarantee.

The "guarantee" you get is that you get an opportunity to earn the title Marine. Its funny how life and the Marine Corps works, but you'll find that whatever task is in front of you that if you perform it to the best of your ability and a good attitude, then you'll be successful. All this talk about MOS assignments and such can and SHOULD be discussed with your recruiter. He has a vested and personal interest to do the best job he can for your journey as a Marine.

Agreed. If you ask him these questions he should be able to formulate some kind of response. As for a guarantee I agree with ipscone. He is YOUR recruiter for a reason utilize the resource. Good luck.

Go without a guarantee for a job you are interested in and it is possible that you get a job you HATE.

When you are stuck with a job you HATE you will be saying stuff like,,,"Fu(k the su(k,,,,big green weenie everyday before, during and after work.

Within a Year you will be a squad leader in tne $hitbird platoon.

You wanna roll the dice,,go ahead.

Get a job field that you are interested in guaranteed now.

A generalization that's not always true. It's equally true that you will get the guarantee and find out it's not what you thought it was and still hate the job. Many people just adapt and do they best they can at any job they are assigned.

It's called basic math, intelligence and common sense. The Corps has been around for over 200 years. Hell, even when I joined in 63 there were no guarantees. Guarantees are a relatively new phenomena and even now, everyone doesn't go in with a guarantee.

Even now, it's not a true guarantee. You only get a guarantee at "an attempt" at an MOS and it's not specific. It's just an area. But if you don't pass the MOS school or flunk out, they don't just let you out of the Corps... do they?

The only guarantee I had was a "chance to become a Marine". Many others went in with the same guarantee I had. I wonder if we should do a poll, in the Open forum.

It might actually be higher than 90%.

Phillies, pick something, get it written into your contract before you sign it and then work smart at being good at it. Better to do what you like than end up hating life because you made a four year mistake.

Best of luck to you.

Dave and Deano have got it right. You don't want to go into the Corps hating your job and it turn, hating the Corps.

The majority of Marines never had any guarantees and they didn't run around like you suggest. The fact you might have had that attitude or seen a few 2%ers doesn't mean it's the norm.

Besides, how many have a clue what they will like? They only know what the MOS title "sounds like". They have no idea what it will really be like, especially since their specific MOS isn't guaranteed. How many find out that their job isn't all that the title made it sound and are still happy serving. Hell yes there are s***birds. But s***birds are so, NOT because of the MOS but because of their attitudes.

The same people whining about not liking this MOS or not liking that MOS or complaining about not getting what they wanted are the same type of people who whine on these forums. Attitude is everything.

Nothing wrong with getting something in writing, if you have a choice, and if you are going into the Corps as a jobs program. But it's absolutely not an absolute that if you don't have a guarantee, or don't get what you want, that you are likely to hate your job or the Corps. That kind of poor attitude rhetoric is inappropriate for this forum.

phillies08,

If you expect a guarantee, get it in writing. How much you will like that job or how well you will do at it, depends entirely on you and your character.

Thanks for all the replies. I have already signed at MEPS. I signed an open contract, no bonus or anything. But what I'm saying my recruiter told me we can look at jobs before i leave in April. We did do that and sent a "request" for Intel Spec. I guess if that gets approved, will I get a new contract and a possible bonus?

No, I am not joining for a bonus...But it's better than nothing. I have not recieved an update and it's been about 3 weeks now since doing that. Just wondering if this is normal?

Yes, make sure you get a new contract with the MOS job field specified. Understand there is a difference between "job field" and "specific job"

As for the bonus....you'll have to ask the recruiter.

Yes also, if anyone in here is an Intel Spec, or was when they enlisted...any tips or heads up about what to expect? My brother does it in the Navy but I know it is quite different. Any idea what I should expect for a day to day?
