Did anybody joined the Marines after serving other military branch services? I am highly considering joining the Marines at this time. I am aware of attending bootcamp and loosing all of my rank. This shows how much I want to become a Marine. Am I making a mistake?

If you are serious and really want to become a Marine you are not making a mistake.

I knew quite a few prior service types who crossed over to the Marine Corps. So you wont be the first.

You might not lose all of your rank. Talk to a Marine recruiter and see what your options are. Nothing wrong with going in the Corps after joining another branch first.

I served with a guy who came over from active duty Army (after serving his 4 years). He picked up CPL right after MCT, so if you do lose rank it probably wont be for long. On the is it the right thing to do question, well that's for you to answer, if earning the title of U.S. Marine means something to you then yes it is the best thing for you to do. As was said before go to talk to a recruiter and look at your options.

I went to see local Marines recruiter and got my release form signed. I have to get endorsement and hopefully state will release me so I can go down to MEPS and pick out shipping out dates.

I went to the drill (MUTA 5) and got endorsement from my commander. My platoon sergeant is very happy that I am leaving for the Marines. My 1st lieutenant, platoon sergeant and my squad leader is former Marines. They told me not to say I'm from the Army.

They said the paper has to go through the state and they'll release me. It will take about two weeks until general signs it.

I'm highly fu**ing motivated. I'm so positive about my pull ups and crunches but running.. I used to run 13 in 2 miles but that was 4 yrs ago. I shouldn't have problem catch up 3 miles though. ahhhhhh can't wait!...

Ok, looks like my shipping date is on March 9th. I did not go down to MEPS yet but I'm aiming for that date. I have a question. They said there is shipping bonus for 5000 but I know you can also receive bonus for your job. Most likely I'll be grunt 0311 and if they have bonus for that job, can I collect two bonuses? for my job and shipping date?

Well Im almost in my re-enlistment window with the Army but Ive always wanted to be a Marine. At this point Im considering all of my options. I read that all prior service will have to go down to E2 for the USMC. Is there anyway to go in as e3 or e4? Will my time in service still be transferred over? Id contact a recruiter but Im currently in Korea.

Correct, you'll lose rank "cross decking" to the USMC. Company Honorman at Recruit Training graduate as LCpl/E-3. You can also wait to pick up rank at MOS school with time-in grade.

There should be a recruiter in Japan.

One thing to keep in mind, this isn't "Let's make a deal"

You will lose soem of the rank you have earned....it's just a fact of life. For someone to cross deck from the Army as an E4/E5 and think they can perform the same as a Marine Cpl/Sgt, well...they are mistaken.

It's no ding against the person, it's just that we are a different branch with a different mission. If you are good you will quickly earn that rank again.

Yes sir, there was an article on about.com about this that had the numbers/percentage break down of "troops" per NCO per service branch that really showed how much of a leadership burden is placed on Marine NCOs.

Maybe burden isn't the correct word but it is more of a leadership responsibility that is given to a Marine Corporal than is given to an average E-4 of another service.

Hopefully the USMC will be taking PS by the time your ETS rolls along.

Right now, it's hard for PS to enter any branch AD as the the retention and recruting rates are high.
