I know it has changed since I was in but the basic qualification is still the same. You will not shoot the pistol for qualification. You will FAM fire the pistol which means that they will let you fire a few rounds to get familier with the weapon. Only Marines that are isssued a pistol in the fleet can get their shooting badge or if someone let's you go out and qualify with one. The most common Marines that are issued pistols are officer's, staff nco's, and certain Marines with MOS's like 0331, 0351,0341, 2111,2311 where their jobs require they carry a sidearm for close up personal protection. As far as the rifle goes you will shoot a known distance course. The ranges's are 200, 300 and 500 yards. You will shoot in different positions and fire a different number of rounds. For example you will shoot at the 200 yard mark in the sitting , kneeling and standing positions. You will need to get a certain number of rounds in the black or you will not qual. The lowest numerical score is 190 which is a pizza box. The next one is 215 which is sharpshooter and then 225 and above which is expert. I'm sure that has changed so I won't go into more detail and hopefully a Marine can chime in who is a little more current.
