Marines,

I've recently been looking into LAR. From the little that I know, the idea of mechanized infantry sounds really interesting (no, I'm not thinking Star Ship Troopers Razz ).

In doing some reasearch, both on Google and on the boards here, all I've really been able to find is the direct mission of LAR:

"...to conduct reconnaissance, security, limited offensive and defensive operations as directed by the division or supported commander."

Some questions I have are:

What type of recon is this, as opposed to that performed by Force Recon / MARSOC types? How does it vary? (Other than the obvious - using LAV's.)

What chance would someone within the infantry MOS (as an officer - which is what I'm planning on) have at getting assigned to a LAR Bn?

IIRC, I've seen one or two members of this forum who are in the LAR community - I can't remember the names, though. If any of you LAR Marines see this - here's a personal question for you:

What are your typical garrison days like? (In general... As opposed to a regular infantry unit, etc.)

Any info would be appreciated!

It varies. For previous IOC classes, LAR went to the honor graduates of that IOC class if they wanted it. Based on rumors (which means don't take this as gospel), for my class that is picking up June 27th, It will likely go to whoever wants it so long as we don't have some ridiculous amount of lieutenants requesting it.

You obviously haven't spent that much time around a bunch of boot lieut's. Big Grin

I would venture to say that we're probably worse than the LCpl underground.

Outside of any training, if you're an 0311, you spend your garrison time cleaning and maintaining your assigned weapon and personal gear and trying to avoid being drafted for any working parties Smile.

If you're an LAV (or LAR) scout, you spend your time doing that stuff PLUS assisting with maintaining the vehicle, which takes up a lot of time and can really, really suck. That's the way it was when I was in LAV's, though it was the reserves and not AD.

That's the trade-off for riding versus humping. The more equipment you're associated with, the more time you get to spend cleaning it.
