Ok just wondering because right now I'm on a reservist contract as an 0311, shipping to Parris Island in a month. If I decide to go active while in the reserves can I keep my 0311 billet? I got a 120 on my GT score but think I would rather stay as an 11.

Also, my goal is to try out for recon or MARSOC eventually, is there any particular 0300 billet that is better for guys wanting to do this?

Thanks for the response Ahill. I know it is not easy to just "go active" but even if I can't my contract is only 6 years. I WILL go active eventually I'm only going to the reserves first to get college out of the way.

And I understand there is so many wannabes who SAY they want to do stuff like MARSOC and the like, I have friends like that and their clowns. I am legitimately interested and I'm trying to take the right steps now to attain that goal.

I don't play video games, I would rather train so maybe one day I can do the REAL thing Wink

If you want to go Active Duty, just sign for Active Duty. Your 03 MOS won't matter much, all 03 MOSes have to know how to function as a Rifleman/Machine Gunner/etc.

A lot of outstanding Marines have tried for MARSOC/Recon and failed, it's supposed to be like that. Out of all the wannabes who said exactly what you just did, not a single one has come back and said they are now an 0321 Reconnaissnace Man. Just trying to put in perspective for you.

I think you shouldn't worry about MARSOC right now. Worry about Boot Camp, then SOI, and see if you can stand life in the Fleet. Once you get there it might not be what you thought it would be. Don't give up, but realize that it takes more than you think...

Was your experience as a 03XX good or bad? Why?

Am asking this question because in other forums people who had the 03XX MOS seem to dislike it.

The only reason us Grunts come off as hating the Infantry is because we know what it really is, and what it isn't. That doesn't mean we hate it. Few people do an entire career in the Infantry for a reason...

I wouldn't trade my experience as an 0311 for anything. There's a lot of hardship, deprevity and misery that comes along with being a Grunt. Not to mention a lot of time spent away from home.

The camraderie you get from depending the Marines in your fire team/squad/platoon is unparalled anywhere else. I made the best friends I'll ever have in the Marine Corps, hands down.

I usually say I had as good of a time as possible with some great guys in some mostly sh*tty places, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

The weather, conditions, workloads, elements may suck, but I had the best experience being an 03. I can say this from my experience serving in non-Infantry units. Camraderie is second to none with the Grunts.

What "other forums" are you talking about?

If I change my contract to Active at this point, my ship date gets pushed all the way back to Devember. After speaking with family/friends I just decided that going to college first is the best route for me, and AD in the Corps will still be there after I finish college and my reserve term is up.

I hope no grunts bust my balls to bad for saying this but I do want to go to war as a grunt in the Corps. I understand I have no idea what war is like but if we are at war I want to be out there serving. I know I'll get my chance in the reserves but one of my fears is that by the time I get into the fleet on AD there won't be the chance to fight.

Then again, maybe I'm getting ahead of myself as Ahill said. How do most grunts feel about going to combat when they enlist? I hope this question isn't out of line... just curious.

Well if you want to finish college, finish college. Be prepared to have that college interrupted by a deployment though.

Having your ship date pushed back is no big deal, enjoy civilian life while you still can. You're young and pretty much care free, all that stops once you get on a bus.

Getting to the Fleet takes approxiamately 3 months of SOI after boot camp. It's not long.

I hope I do get deployed during college, that will help me burn up thosee extra 2 years of my reserve contract I would have after finishing my Bachelor's degree.

As for civilian life, I appreciate being able to sleep in on the weekends, and go see a movie with my girlfriend occasionally but I WANT TO BE A MARINE NOW! I want the proffessionalism and cammeraderie I see in all of the former Marines my dad works with. I can't bear the thought of hanging around here for 8 more months just training for bootcamp and working.

Is there any 0302's on this forum? If so, could you explain your experience, and how it compares and differs from the enlisted Marines?
