Do mortarmen ever go out on patrols, or do other riflemen-type things?

No, they sit in their holes and play spades while the 11s do all the sh*t work.

A Marine that just came home from Bootcamp told me not to be a Morterman because the Marine Corps isnt sending anymore Mortarmen to Iraq. Is that True? Also, I am having a little trouble deciding which specific MOS i want to "try out" for in the 0300 field. If I asked to be an 0311 is that going to be garunteed for me? I understand for any of the other jobs I would have to try out for them.

Iraq Class of 2007 |
Yes mortarmen go on patrols in Iraq. Our mortarmen are our Company Cmdr's security detail because the way things are in Iraq right now, we do not have any need for a mortar section. Our mortarmen haven't touched their tubes the entire time we've been in country. So basically, they're nothing but 0311s. |

Thank you for the response.
Another quick question, do all 03xx's in Iraq do riflemen type things. I ask because I want to be Infantry, or a rifleman to be more specific, but I know I can't have that guaranteed to me, so I'm trying to figure out if all O3xx's do riflemen type things. |

You will be doing "riflemen type things" unless you are just a complete **** for brains and sometimes not even then. In which case you would probably never leave the FOB/patrol base/etc.

You wanna be a Grunt, No Problem, thats about the easist guarantee you can get. Grunt's ARE the Corps! Everything else is there to support 'em. Just tell your recruiter. |

here's a little tid bit on 0351 in SOI you get to play with demo and shoot ur SMAW but then depending on your unit you get put in you will hardly ever see demo or shoot your SMAW you just go out on patrols with the crunchies, but the trick is is you still have to carry your SMAW, but its a good time if you ever do get to do your job. other problem cutting score for corporal is usually either closed or its really ridiculus so be prepared for terminal lance

I think the cutting score is around 1640 right now. Could be wrong, but it's somewhere in that ballpark. |
