Hi there,

I got some friends here that are on a student exchange program. And they want to join the USMC. I wonder if it even is possible - by our immigration standards they are clearly aliens (only a student visa). I know that a lot of people from across the south boarder serve. From the official statements of the recruiters the whole case is ambiguous. So I'd like to know what people that are already Marines know about this - and do you know any people that joined up not being citizens.

I think I already know that some jobs in the Corps would be restricted to them (from my point it is a bit of a shame, both are IT specialists with degrees from their countries), but I guess they dont care.

Just for the record one of them is from Poland and the other one from the Czech Republic.

Thanks in advance,

I hope I can soon say - Semper Fi Smile

I would edit your heading to Foreigners in the Corps before you get some Marines on your tail

Sounds like they have already talked with a recruiter and didn't like the answer they got.

If they have not talked with a recruiter I would suggest that they do so the correct orders can be explained to them. if they talk to one and don't like the answer they recieve, go see another. If after the second recruiter they have recieved the same info...

Uh...it's not an "ambiguous" policy. You have to be a permanent resident (have a green card) to join the U.S. military. Period. Whether you're from "south of the border" or anywhere else.

Your friends cannot join the military while here on a non-immigrant student visa - J, F, whatever. They have to be here as immigrants, where they get an I-551 at the port of entry and are allowed to get a SS card, work, live permanently, etc.
