A Marine Corps recruiter told me that Security Forces is now an MOS (not a secondary, but a primary MOS). The one website I found info about it at was about.com that said it was a secondary MOS. Does anyone here know if it has been changed or did the recruiter just lie to me.

If you get it on contract as your PMOS, then it is a primary.

Unless it has changed within the last year, it is not a primary MOS. I just got the following from this documnet on the usmc.mil web site:

quote:
3. MARINE CORPS SECURITY FORCES:

a. First-term enlisted Marines assigned to CONUS Marine Corps Security Force units serving in "B" billets (i.e., MOS 8152 Guard) may be eligible for transfer upon completion of 12 months in a guard billet. A standard tour for all guards (MOS 8152), lance corporal and below, is 24 months.

b. Marines transferring must have sufficient obligated service to complete at least 12 months after arrival at the new duty station.

c. Requests for transfer to the FMF may also be submitted after 12 months on station to arrive 6 months prior to the requested month of transfer. Marines who agree to extend their enlistment in order to qualify for such assignments will receive priority consideration. The DoD restrictions on first-term PCS moves noted in MCO P1300.8 apply. Final determination will, of necessity, be based on the availability of replacement personnel. This provision does not apply to first-term Marines serving accompanied overseas tours with command-sponsored family members.

Does it sound to you like an untruthful recruiter?

Who knows? If he is not an 03 he might not know a lot about MCSF; maybe he misunderstood something he read; maybe it HAS changed in the last year. I have no idea.

But I have to wonder something. Is your problem that you don't want to be an 03? While Security Forces may sound cool, most guys I know that did it were glad to get to the fleet.

Artillery brings dignity to what would otherwise be just a brawl.

If I had to do it all over, I would have avoided it like the plague.

Well, to be specific he told me about right after he told my friend next to me( this was at the high school during lunch periods) that he might be able to switch from avionics to Security Forces. It was described to me as "MPs on steroids". Everything Ive heard otherwise is its not like MPs really at all.

In reality, a Marine recruiter is just like a recruiter for any large corporation. While he may have done a job for that corporation, he may not have intimate experience with all of the jobs/careers in that corporation. He may know that down in Plant "B" they put widgets into sockets. But he doesn't know how they do it. It is the same way in the Marine Corps. A recruiter can't have expert knowledge in all MOS's. So, what he will do is try to explain an MOS in ways that you can understand, but are not that technical.

"MPs on steroids." Thats a good one. Because those of us who have been in Security Forces know that it has nothing to do with Military Police. Security Forces have been discussed numerous times here, so a search of that topic will give you a good idea of what it entails.

Security Forces to me sounds more exciting then it really is. Its supposed to be a B-billet, like recruiter, drill instructor, or combat instructor. Your PMOS is 0311, your SMOS is Firewatch. You do 3 years? as Firewatch then you go to an infantry unit as a corporal who doesn't know **** about the infantry with one year? left on your enlistment. Basically you become a private all over again for a year after you are done with security forces, oh yah and under the command of a Lance Corporal.

The learning curve is definately steep. It was for me and I actually only did two years of barracks duty and still had two left in the fleet instead of just one. If anyone wants to be a grunt above anything else - and be really good at it - I'd skip security forces altogether and just enlist as an 03. Just my opinion.

FAST is probably one of the most misleadingly-cool-sounding billets in existence.
