Hate to break it to you jimnsc, but the answer is yes (sort of). Thing is, you have to have pretty good luck to do it. I came in as an 0203 Ground Intelligence Officer, the lt billet for which is Scout/Sniper Platoon Commander. As such, all 0203s attend the Infantry Officer Course and the Scout/Sniper Platoon Commander Course at Quantico in addition to Intel School before hitting the fleet. When I finally did get to my unit, 2/3, (the training pipeline for 0203s is over a year long) I was assigned as the Scout/Sniper Platoon Commander. My Battalion XO at the time insisted that all his SSPCs go to the Scout/Sniper basic course, so off I went. During my time at 2/3 I went to SSBC and became a qualified 8541 (now 0317), completed SOTG Urban Sniper, shot the high-angle package at Bridgeport, and served 2 combat tours as a platoon commander. The bad news? I'm the only guy I'm aware of who was able to do this stuff. The only other officers who are S/S are generally the OICs of one of the Sniper Schools and put themselves through the S/S basic course.

With all due respect there Sierra Actual, the odds of a wannabee here doing what you did is about the same as hitting a single number (let's say zero for the pun of it Big Grin) back to back to back on a roulette table, probably worse.

Also, as the S/S Plt. CO, what were your odds of actually being the shooter or spotter on a sniper mission?

DeepRecon...You're right on that count. I count myself as about the luckiest zero in the Corps that I was able to do what I did. Now I'm thinking I'll get out, since it's not going to get any better than that (I work at CENTCOM HQ now, bigtime pogue). As for the shooter/spotter question, again the odds are slim. I went out with my teams as often as I could, but would almost always defer to having my shooters (or even our junior Marines sometimes) on the gun, since they're the ones who need the experience and deserve the chance. The only time I would put myself on the gun would usually be at night or during sometime when we weren't expecting to have to take a shot. Although I am a pretty good shot, I had to always remind myself that that wasn't my job, it was theirs. I meant to make that clear to this kid here, but forgot, thanks for reminding me. S/F

Sir, with all the punning around I did in my previous post, I meant no disrespect in any way, shape or form. I just want to make that clear.

It could get better. You sound like you can play a lot of numbers on that roulette wheel. You're bound to hit one... or more. Maybe not back to back to back but...

Does that mean we can keep trying? Smile But seriously, sounds like you have had a fun career so far. I bet you could get out and join Blackwater and make soem serious cash.
