Basic Training |
So, my Marine recruiter called, knowing that I wanted something to do with computers, and I leave on the 21st of this month, and said. That he has a 'command control/electrician' spot open. And this job has signing bonus of $10,000, after completion of school.
Does anyone have any information about this job, as I was leaning towards avionics or ATC? |

A friend of mine in Recruit training came in open contract and get this option. Last time I talked to him he was pretty happy with it. The school takes forever he said, but the field seemed pretty open. You could really end up doing a lot of different things, He really didnt work on computers too much, more electrical work and such. If you are really looking for just computers Data systems is probably more you, otherwise command control/electrician is a pretty solid MOS from what i've been told.

Is there a chance, that I could change my job in Basic?
---I mean from what I heard, they could look at my scores, see, that I would be better used at a different MOS and approach me?!? |

Not if you are contracted for a specific enlistment option. Tell your recruiter that you want Data Systems and that you will wait to ship until a slot for Data Systems opens up or cancel the entire enlistment. Data Systems starts you out (what I can best describe in civilian terms) as a network administrator apprentice. You will maintain connectivity between workstations, routers, bridges, switches and hubs. ---------------------------------------------------- Semper Fi, DeepRecon Communications Chief http://www.forcerecon.com/ |

Well, I guess I better man-up, and take what is given. I mean in the Corps, not everyone gets EXACTLY what they want, not to mention a bonus. (Almost unheard of, from my understanding, still don't know why the bonus is given, thought it was to fill a position, that they need warm bodies; like the Army does infantry)
But, you know there is always the option of changing MOSs after 4 years, but my recruiter said that it would be harder to get promoted if I change my MOS. 5 Years in the Corps, yet only one year in that MOS.... But, also, what is Command Control in civilian terms again?
What does this mean? |

If you aren't open contract, getting your MOS changed in boot camp isn't going to happen. I'm pretty sure MOS's get assigned to you in MCT. |

If you test high enough to get the type of job you want and you have a little patience, you can get close to exactly what you want.
You have to make it known to your recruiter that this is the only thing you will accept and you will not ship until you see it in writing. If you want to ship as soon as possible and it does not matter what you get, go open contract. Whatever you decide, always put out 100%, even if later on you feel you should have made the other decision. Don't let up until you fulfill your contractual obligation. ---------------------------------------------------- Semper Fi, DeepRecon Communications Chief http://www.forcerecon.com/ |

Well, after doing some research 04xx Data Systems is merged with 06xx Communications, (Unless this information isn't true) http://www.29palms.usmc.mil/tenants/mcces/bco/dts.asp So, it looks I got what I want... |
