Hello Marines,
First off I would like to thank all those that help us wannabes with their posts. It has been useful and reassuring to hear from those with experience. I leave soon for Boot and was wondering if there are any last minute insights or advice you'd be willing to share. I'm trying to tie up the little loose ends before I go. Is there something maybe a person might easily overlook that should be remembered? |

don't ever be last at anything. doesn't matter if it's PT, getting out of the rack, finishing chow, etc. finishing last is a great way to put yourself in the spotlight.
find the most squared away, locked on recruit and make friends with them. if you follow their example, you should do okay. if you do make friends with the platoon s***bird, do your best to help turn them around. don't talk a good game. let your actions speak for you. don't ever talk like a DI to another recruit. you sound ridiculous and everyone will lose respect for you shut your mouth and open your ears. don't take anything personal. this is business. good luck to you. |

Artillery brings dignity to what would otherwise be just a brawl. |
Keep your eyes open too, but don't "eyeball" the area. |

The life you live right now is about to end shortly.
You have chosen the path less taken and are about to undergo things that 99% of people will never have any clue about. You are going to live a life of depravation, hardship and harsh reality checks. Keep your head up, sound the fuck off and try your absolute best at everything you do. And remember that Recruit Training is the EASIEST part of your Marine Corps career. Good Luck. |

register to vote in your hometown before you go to boot camp....and make sure you vote absentee while in MOS school....or in the fleet.
-Big election year; be a part of it and vote. |

Tell your parents/family to write, using only plain white envelopes. No Recruit wants to leave mail call without getting a letter. It'll take about 2 weeks after you hit the yellow footprints for your parents/family to get your address. Another week or so to get a letter from them.
No more e-mail. No more cell phones. And no more texting. So write when you can. Your parents/family will want to hear of your accomplishments as you progress. Remember, you volunteered for the treatment your going to soon be getting. So, suck it up, and keep focused on your dream of getting your Eagle, Globe, and Anchor after 13 weeks. Thank you for serving our Great Nation. |

Blend in, don't piss off the guide, never vollunteer, sense of humor sense of humor sense of humor. When **** sucks, just make fun of it. finding good inside jokes can make life fun. Don't worry about mail when you don't get it. Sometimes DI's are just holding it back. For PT, just focus on breathing. If your muscles hurt, but you can breathe, you can keep going, But when you are smoked, you're done. So just make sure to work your core muscles during your square away time. Also, don't be the person who doesn't yell. Yell yell yell. And be sure to study your Recruit Knowledge.

Here some advice. Ask WHY? when the Drill Instructor tells you to do something.
But seriously my advice is Mark your crap as soon as you get it. It sucks having to brush you teeth with someone else tooth brush. even if it is with recruit tape, MARK IT. |
