Field, 0300 Infantry
(This occupation is for males only)

Capabilities - Naval oriented expeditionary warriors of final resort providing maximum versatility in chaotic and uncertain conditions of crisis and conflict.

Infantry Marines are trained in core competencies of gunnery on infantry weapons, combat operations, and battlefield awareness; employing a variety of weapons, and through communications links, supporting arms including artillery, naval gunfire, and close air support; sea-based, projecting onto vital littorals in any climate or place.

They are capable of the full spectrum of combat, day or night, against opposing forces with a full spectrum of capabilities, including NBC; using maneuver warfare to locate, close with, and destroy the enemy by fire and maneuver; either on foot or mounted on trucks, assault vehicles, assault craft, or vertical assault aircraft.

Infantry Marines are able to secure and defend self and vital terrain by repelling the enemy's assault by fire, maneuver, and close combat; cultivated in a leadership continuum that develops the basic warrior through experience and coaching into a fully qualified noncommissioned officer and staff noncommissioned officer, a combat leader of Marines who trains and directs the actions of Marines in teams, sections, squads, and platoons, while coordinating with higher and adjacent units and supporting units.

Do mortarmen ever go out on patrols, or do other riflemen-type things?

A Marine that just came home from Bootcamp told me not to be a Morterman because the Marine Corps isnt sending anymore Mortarmen to Iraq. Is that True? Also, I am having a little trouble deciding which specific MOS i want to "try out" for in the 0300 field. If I asked to be an 0311 is that going to be garunteed for me? I understand for any of the other jobs I would have to try out for them.

When you arrive at the School of Infantry, you will be given a dream sheet, with the order of prefrence on MOS's you want. But that was just for us instructors to know statistically what you all wanted. I understand for any of the other jobs I would have to try out for them. When I arrived, I wanted to be an 0311. However, my GT score was high enough to get me bumped over to an 0351 PMOS. As a 51, we did a lot of hands-on with Demo, which sort of pissed off a few 11's who were short changed.

Yes mortarmen go on patrols in Iraq. Our mortarmen are our Company Cmdr's security detail because the way things are in Iraq right now, we do not have any need for a mortar section. Our mortarmen haven't touched their tubes the entire time we've been in country. So basically, they're nothing but 0311s.

Thank you for the response.

Another quick question, do all 03xx's in Iraq do riflemen type things.

I ask because I want to be Infantry, or a rifleman to be more specific, but I know I can't have that guaranteed to me, so I'm trying to figure out if all O3xx's do riflemen type things.

You will be doing "riflemen type things" unless you are just a complete **** for brains and sometimes not even then. In which case you would probably never leave the FOB/patrol base/etc.

You wanna be a Grunt, No Problem, thats about the easist guarantee you can get. Grunt's ARE the Corps! Everything else is there to support 'em. Just tell your recruiter.

here's a little tid bit on 0351 in SOI you get to play with demo and shoot ur SMAW but then depending on your unit you get put in you will hardly ever see demo or shoot your SMAW you just go out on patrols with the crunchies, but the trick is is you still have to carry your SMAW, but its a good time if you ever do get to do your job. other problem cutting score for corporal is usually either closed or its really ridiculus so be prepared for terminal lance

I think the cutting score is around 1640 right now. Could be wrong, but it's somewhere in that ballpark.
