I have a question regarding my MOS. In June my brother and I spoke with our recruiter and advised him we wanted to enlist together so we could go to RT at the same time. My brother was in ROTC for 3 years, and had 3 years of college. I needed to finish a half credit course for my H.S. diploma, and did so. We both took the ASVAB and passed MEPS. He enlisted in DEP about 3 weeks before me. He requested Intelligence and is scheduled for DLAB at end of August. I enlisted DEP after finishing MEPS 2 weeks ago. At the time I told the recruiter and the counselor at MEPs I needed a day or two to decide on my MOS area. I called my recruiter after about 36 hours and told him I wanted to do intelligence also, and asked him to schedule me for DLAB. He says he can't get me in; that that MOS is filled up. I told him to adjust my DEP ship date and that I would wait. I spoke with him today and he still hasn't done it. He is pushing me into infintry, which was my second choice, but I really want to go intelligence with my brother if I can. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
If you qualify for intel, and that's what you really want to do, then you need to continue pushing your recruiter to take care of you. To your recruiter, it doesn't matter whether you go intel of infantry because it's a contract regardless. It's just going to take a little work for him to get the slot for you. This is YOUR future, and this will be a deciding factor in whether you're happy with your decision to join, or disgruntled. It may be true that he doesn't have anymore intel slots open this FY. However, the slots for next FY should be coming out in the next month or so, and you have 365 days from the date you joined the DEP to ship to boot camp. Bottom line, DO NOT SHIP TO BOOT CAMP IF YOU'RE NOT HAPPY WITH WHAT YOUR CONTRACT SAYS!!! If you "kind of" want intel, but infantry would satisfy you as well, and staying infantry would allow you and your brother to go to boot camp together, then maybe you should consider sticking with infantry. Only you can make this decision, though, not me, and not your recruiter. Just do your recruiter one favor. MAKE SURE this is what you want before you put him through this trouble. If you're not 100%, don't ask him to do this until you are 100% sure. That's the most frustrating thing for a recruiter is to make this happen, and then the applicant change his mind again. Just a bit of advice...Good Luck!
I scored a 76 on my afqt, and a 114 on my GT, they were ok scores, and the recruiter said my asvab scores qualified me for pretty much anything. I thought about what you said GySgt., and I have decided to stay with the Infantry MOS. I believe that is what I would like most. Plus, my brother and I will still be able to leave for RT on the same day. Thanks for the advice, it helped me put things in perspective. We ship first week of oct. to san diego.
Just make sure you're happy with your decision. At the end of the day, it's your career, and you have to live with that decision. You just need to figure out what's going to give you the most satisfaction. Do you want to do a job that challenges your mind, or do you want a job that challenges your body? Both are equally important, but have different requirements. Intel is a great MOS to get into, but I'd also argue that some of the greatest/smartest leaders were of the infantry background. Just make sure you're making the best decision for YOU....If it's intel you want, and your recruiter just can't find the slot right now, maybe you should sacrifice going to boot camp with your brother to have a satisfying end result. If going to boot camp with your brother is important to you, and infantry is the kind of challenge you're looking for, then stick to it, and commit yourself 100%!
