I am a brand new DEPer, fresh out of MEPs, and have a quick question about my number one MOS. I have heard that Motor Transport Operator is just convoy work, but in the book at the recruiting office it stated that you would be able to drive Humvees, LAVs, and M-class tactical vehicle's. So, is all of a Motor Transport Operator's work in convoy's, or is other things as well. Thank you in advance.
Motor transport, everything and anything the Marines need in the field,on the airfield,at work sites, dozers, cranes and even moving tanks(i think they still do this at some level,i might be wrong)is done my motor trans. Not a bad job...Lots of work.
so let me get this right havent taken the asvab and im doing meps wednesday so i go stay at the hotel tuesday night wednesday i take the asvab and they give me the rest of the day or do they cram it into one hole day of utter fun
I came from an Infantry Battalion. (3/3). Our Vehicle Drivers (7 ton, hummer) were a 50/50 mix of our own school trained grunts ( a lot from the weapons platoons and Wpns CO 81's) and the rest were MOS Motor T guys from okinawa.
From talking to others expect to see a similar mix. The MRAPs were treated the same way in this deployment. We sent a few guys from each platoon to a class to learn how to drive them and the Motor T guys got the same class.
Motor T works a lot on deployment. I mean a LOT. The maintenence bubbas that fixxed our trucks I think they worked longer hours than we did sometimes especially repairing an IEDed truck, but they did an AWESOME job and kept our trucks running very well.
As a 3531 you will get licenses for the M1152 and the MK23. Most units you will go to will have non motor T Marines to drive the hummvees, you will be driving mostly the 7 tons. Convoys are a big part of your job description, but thats not all you will do. Motor T, especially 3531's are kind of a multi-purpose Marine. If you like vehicles and driving then 3531 is a great MOS for you.
For the MRAP and the LVS and such, you will usually have to be picked by your unit to go and get extra training.
i'm 3533, my secondary MOS is 3531. In MOS school you'll get your license to drive the humvee and 7 ton and they'll give you the option to go to LVS school for another month and a half but by that time you'll probably be sick of fort lost in the woods.
if you get deployed, unless they put you in a rifle squad, you'll be running 7 ton convoys most likely. i'm a reservist so i can't speak for 3500 active duty life but chances are you'll be spending a lot of time PM'ing (preventive maintenance) and doing some mech jobs. good luck and ill be happy to answer any more of your questions.
My MOS isn't in the Motor T field but I am filling an augment billet in a Trucks platoon. We are attaching to 3/6 on 16 Nov.
We're getting our HMMWV and 7 ton licenses. All the instructors are Motor T guys. Seems like a laid back MOS here stateside but over in Iraq, it's a whole different ballgame.
It's a pretty dangerous MOS from what I gather, obviously, with the threat of IEDs. But it looks to be a lot of fun. I can't wait to get to Iraq...been a long time coming. If I had to do it all over again, I would go Motor T way before I'd go aviation mechanic. That is the reason I put in for augment billet. Had to get out of the aviation environment.
