I have a question regarding eyesight. I am correctable to 20/20 in my left eye and only 20/50 in my right, and I was wondering if that would automatically disqualify me from enlisting?

Most people say it HAS to be 20/20 in both, but on some websites I've seen they say otherwise and I just wanted to make sure.

I know everyone is going to say to go see a recruiter, but I just wanted to see if anyone knew this right off the bat. Thanks.

You ever heard of the term "BC glasses?" I can assure you these folks do not have 20/20 eyesight without some sort of eye wear.

It is believed that this terminology originated in the form "BC's" in the Navy in 1981. The reason for this moniker was that "it would be impossible to get a date while wearing these glasses."

Roll Eyes Oh BS! I know for a fact that we were calling them that in 1980 in the Corps. Big Grin

HollywoodMarine:

Yes I know that you can wear glasses to correct your eyesight. But my question was, would I get automatically disqualified from enlisting if I was only correctable to 20/20 in one eye, and 20/50 in the other?

Do you have to possess a 20/20 vision to not wear glasses?

Yes thats what I meant, 20/20 is what you need to not wear glasses, if its worse, then glasses will help you correct it to 20/20. Anyways wait for one of the Marines to confirm it. Im gonna get roasted in a minute for answering your question(since Im not a Marine...).

I am not a Marine but I will tell you the same thing my recruiter has told me.
Wait until you get to MEPs and it will be handled from there. Your not finding any definite answers here as it is taken case by case from what I've been told.

What you need is to have vision correctable to 20/20. You will find out whether or not you can join at MEPs. No one here can tell you for sure if a medical problem will disqualify you, but MEPs can.

Per DOD Instruction 6130.4 Dated Jan 18, 2005:
E1.3. Vision

The Secretaries of the Military Departments shall, under the provisions of reference (b), have the authority to change Service-specific vision standards and establish other standards for special programs.

E1.3.1 Current distant visual acuity of any degree that does not correct with spectacle lenses to at least one of the following is disqualifying:
  • E1.3.1.1 20/40 in one eye and 20/70 in the other eye.
  • E1.3.1.2. 20/30 in one eye and 20/100 in the other eye.
  • E1.3.1.3. 20/20 in one eye and 20/400 in the other eye.

E1.3.2. Current near visual acuity of any degree that does not correct to 20/40 in the better eye is disqualifying.

The standards could have changed since this DODI was published. It will be best to "see" a recruiter.
