Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe expert shooting is required for scout/sniper in Recruit Training. So what exactly is expert? Misses once? or what?

Also, how long after I turn 17 can I enlist in the Dep program?
Note: I am going into Junior year in high school.

As far as I know, they're still using the 250 point system...so I'll explain that.

Expert is classified as shooting a 220 or above on the rifle range. 210-219 is sharpshooter, and 190-209 is marksman.

On the rifle range, you will shoot from the 200, the 300, and the 500 yd lines. I can't remember the exact positions you use at each yard line, but you will switch between slow fires/rapid fires, and the positions of prone, sitting, kneeling, and standing. The 500 yd line is prone slow fire only.

So anyways, from each of these yard lines you'll shoot a set amount of rounds. Each shot you fire is worth a maximum of 5 points, minimum, obviously, of zero. Depending on where you hit the target determines how many points you get. That's basically how the scoring system works...you can find more detailed explanations by using the search function on these forums.

As for deping in, it is my understanding that you won't be able to dep in if you are only going into your junior year of highschool...regardless of age. You could, of course, get your GED, but have fun getting into the Marine Corps that way. It'd be a lot easier to just finish your junior year and dep in once you hit senior year.

Hope this helps.

I shot a 248 at the camp margarita range once.

It was nerve racking, Ever officer and PMI was standing around me watching.I think I got all bulls except I kicked one in the kneeling at 300 yards, and 1 on the 200 yard prone.

Sucks to ace the standing and drop it in the prone. *wince*

Reason that the NRA was created, to instill proper marksmanship training after Civil War proved that Americas citizenry was badly in need of proper training in shooting skills.

Money was set aside by Federal Government that is still being put aside for ammo, who is shooting it all?
