I posted a similiar post in the Ladies section of the Marine Discussions, but realize not all of you frequent their forum. Sofor the sake of further information and insight I'm going to repost here in hopes of getting as much information as possible.
I am wondering about being a nurse in the Marine Corps. I've worked as a nursing assistant for nearly two years and plan to start nursing school this year. However I've always had a huge desire to join the Marines, and wondered if I could take nursing school through them, and have the privilege of being taught by them and working in military hospitals. Does anyone have any information on this?? I'd like to understand this a bit before talking to recruiters. Thanks for your time! Don't take life so seriously. You'll never come out alive. |

Being a nurse in the Marine Corps is NOT going to happen. It's one of those things that will take a Constitutional Amendment.
You can join the Navy, become a Nurse and hope you get attached to a Navy Hospital or unit supporting Marines. That's the closest you'll come. |

Am I missing something? You have over 1000 posts and didn't know there were no nurses in the Marine Corps?

I replied to your post in the Ladies section. It echoes SgtLt's post...

Originally when I first joined this site, I was alot younger and not sure what I wanted to do. I had originally wanted to be an MP. However I want to take my nursing, this is a recent decision. After working as a Nursing Assistant for two years I applied for my nursing, and was hoping there was a medical area in the Marines. I had never, ever looked into this before, so your not missing anything, I just simply didn't know! Thank you very much for your help SgtLtUSMC and GracieLou! Now I need to decide whether to continue my nursing, or follow my dream of being a Marine! Don't take life so seriously. You'll never come out alive. |

The pleasure was mine. Anyways, you can be and Nurse and be a Marine in the reserves. Have you ever thought about that? No where does it say that whatever you do in the civilian world, it has to mirror in the reserves. A couple of years ago, there was a Harvard Law Educated ATTORNEY who enlisted into the Marine Corps reserve and his choice of MOS was infantry! (Yeah, he was eligible for OCS, but that's another story.) He fulfilled two dreams of his: becoming an attorney and becoming a Marine at about the sametime. So that's an option for you, the USMCR if you want to be both. Oh and don't listen to folks who might say (if you went that route I suggested) that your degree will be a "waste." A "waste" is up to each individual person on how they present themselves to the world, educated or not. |

The Marine Corps has no medical or theologian personnel. We kill our wounded and eat our dead!
HA,HA,HA! Actually, the Navy supplies those personel to us, so if you want to be a nurse WITH the Marine's, you gotta be a Navy Corpsman. |

Thank you...thank you!!! That might be what I'll do. I have a hard time with the idea of being in another branch. The Marine Corps is my dream, so being a nurse and a reservist would be fantastic. I work more hours than I can get with a line, so I tend to stay casual which means I pick my own shifts, and if I stayed that way I would always have a job regardless of how much time the military required of me. I think you may have presented me with the perfect solution. Thank you very much!!! Don't take life so seriously. You'll never come out alive. |

If you want and if you think you have the ability or desire to lead, you can apply for a reserve commission aswell. Be advised though, the amount of reserve officer billets (i.e positions) in your area can be limited. |

You are very welcome! I am sure that SgtLt's suggestion is a good option for you to look into. Good Luck |

Hey Ash,
If you're planning at being in the NY area, post school, and be in the Reserves you'll probably be drilling out of Garden City. Give me a call when you move - I think you'll move about a week before I go to boot camp, I'll put you in touch with my recruiter. E |

What’s your boot camp date again Eduardo?? I was going to fly out to NY this coming month to go talk to a recruiter and the Universities I applied to, and go house hunting but I'm not sure if I will make it out that soon. I'm going to Jamaica in July, and doing Carifest all June, plus I'm taking upgrade courses at the University here. I want the highest marks possible to work with. I will give you a call before I head out to NY, and if you haven’t shipped out yet I would love to be put in touch with your recruiter. Even if your already in boot, text me his number and where his recruiting office is. SgtLtUSMC I do have the desire to lead, and I have a leader like personality by nature, however a leader in the Marine Corps, considering those who've gone before me is a pretty big shoe to fit! I would definitely love to do that, and would give it my all, and would hope I'd be worthy of the position. How do I apply for that? Thanks again Don't take life so seriously. You'll never come out alive. |
