Just today I met with a marine recruiter and explained to her that I had interest in the marines and choose out 3 jobs that I was interested in. None of them were infantry jobs. More specifically it was Weather Service, Air Control, and Intelligence.

After the selection I also expressed my interest in becoming a sniper and she said that it was possible and it would be an added bonus on top of my 3 potential jobs. But after leaving her office and searching vainly on the internet for more sniper information it seems like only a specific infantry job would only have access to a sniper position. And on top of that the requirements seemed pretty high for me. This sniper information was not from any official site but a post on another military forum.

So, whats the deal with marine sniper school? Would it really be possible to say, be a Weather Service man and be eligible for sniper school?

Many things are possible. Some things, such as being in weather services and becoming a sniper, are much less likely.

Use the find function at the top of the page to search for sniper and any other subjects that interest you, You will find a lot of information.

Your best bet would be to serve a combat tour as an 03 and then apply.

One of the original wannabes on this board who did become, and was the first to become, a sniper has posted answers relating to the subject and sometimes still frequents the board.

Your recruiter knows "Jack $hit" about the Infantry. You have to be in the Grunts in order to apply for STA or Scout Snipers.

Scout Snipers very on unit requirements. For instance in an Arty BN (as of 2004, that may have changed given what current missions are) we were able to have 1 sniper per BN. That spot however was reserved for the BN Intel Officer.

Are you sure about this? I know that many ground intel officers went to the sniper employment course at Quantico, but I did not think they went to actual sniper school.

Around 02 I looked into it myself while I was board phone watching in the 3 shop thinking that I wanted to become one myself. The only person who could attend the actual school was the Intel Officer. It was a nice 10 min thought before that. Like I said, things could have changed sense I got out in 04, but up to that point it was still the way it went in an Arty unit.
I don't know that we had any of our S2 officers that went through the course and were designated though. It would seem to me that is something that either the CO or the 3 officer would have determend if they needed to be sent.

If this Kid wants to go Scout Sniper he's going to end up in the Infantry anyway. Heck, we have new posters over there asking about how well they'll be received making a lat move from support to grunts as an NCO. If this Kid wants it, he might as well go up front or wait an entire enlistment just to end up Infantry anyway. Why waste the time?

No doubt that would seem the "easiest" and smartest path if he wants to be one. Just not nesicarily the only one.

No truer words written as there's always more than one way to get something done in the Corps.

Stop right there. Forget about ever being a Scout Sniper. Right now.

And if you even become a Marine one day, for the love of God, dont even try to attend the school, ever, because sh$# heads like you, pogues (or in your case a freakin wannabe pogue) try hard enough and eventually get their dream of attending an operator's school, and for what? You will never operate, so all you are doing is robbing the school slot from a grunt who will actually be in the sh#@ and might actually need those skills, all so that you can show off your certificate to your pogue buddies and play "bad-ass" for a day.

It sickens me when I see some pogue in the H+S shop with dive bubble or jump wings on his cammies, or hear about some pogue S-2 clerk going to SERE school since, God forbid, with all the intel he is privy to, if he was ever to leave the most fortified FOB in the BN's AO (like, never) to make a log run to the nearest Airbase he might have to escape and evade enemy pursuers!

For other wannabes clicking on this thread looking for answers to a "sniper question" allow me to clear up some bullsh$%.

Its students are mostly 03's from fleet scout sniper platoons, or 0321's from the recon community. Some random units manage to get a random slot here and there (God knows why). But of the 4 "basic courses" a school house will run each year, with 30-35 students per class, *maybe* 1 or 2 in each class will be from these random units (and these random units are all former 03's doing some B-billet-ish job, like SOTG or CBIRF or SecForces)

Aside from the shameful joke that is the Quantico school, sniper school has a roughly 70% attrition rate (70 at Hawaii and Stone Bay, 50-ish at Pend) over the last 4 years.

Officers will only attend the Quantico course, since they know better. 2 or 3 might be in each class there. They of course ALSO rob slots from deserving PIGs all so they can show off their tooth to their officer buddies and feel like a bad ass.

Absolutely no, not ever. MPs are the only pogues that might get a slot.

F'ing False. You will more than likely be a turd after a combat tour as an 03. And I dont mean a bad Marine, I just mean a turd. Theres a big difference. A combat tour as an 03, save for a select few true Motards, will drive you to the point of "I dont give a fark anymore" and leave you counting down your days to EAS. These Marines who come to STA are simply looking to skate, since they probably noticed we never, ever do working parties.

If you want to become a Sniper, take the indoc, ASAP. Dont wait. Thats dumb.
