I had posted this in the MODF but was informed that it should have been posted here. That was my dumb mistake and it won't happen again. So here is my question what's the difference between Marine Corps Reserve and Active Reserve? I did searching but found nothing. Thanks.

F-yeah! I posted something worthy of a temporary position at the top of the forum! |
Sweet. Good job.
There's a few of us reservists around here. I'll help you out more in a bit, but must go do stuff with/to the girlfriend. Short story: Reserve: One weekend a month, two (or four) weeks a year training. Usually collegiates and business-people. IRR is Inactive Ready Reserve: Called from your couch to Iraqistan because of need. Always those done with their contract, wether USMC or USMCR. Hope that helps. Thanks for listening to the MODF. Bye. |

The Marine Reserve is broken down into four major sections:
Select Marine Corps Reserve(SMCR)- This is what most people think of when they hear Reservist. These Marines do monthly drills and annual training. Individual Ready Reserve (IRR)- These are Marines who have completed their initial obligated service. For most Active Duty Marines obligated service is 4 years; while for SMCR Marines obligated service is 6 years(this is usually to receive GI Bill benefits). Once your obligated service is complete you can transfer to the IRR to complete the remainder of your contract. Remember for the most part all initial contracts are 8 years. IRR Marines are not obligated to drill; however, they can compete for promotion by completing MCIs, an annual PFT, and rifle range. Also, IRR Marines can request Individual Augmentee Orders to come back onto Active Duty to fill critical billets. You can remain in the IRR until retirement by continuing to complete satisfactory years(this is a whole post by itself so I will not get into it). Active Reserve(AR)- SMCR Marines can request orders to active duty usually to fill a specific billet and usually withing the Marine Force Reserve, ie an admin clerk on an I&I staff somewhere. An AR billet lasts for 3 years after which the Marine falls back into SMCR status, or requests new AR orders. Retired Reserve- These Marines have reached their 20 years of service but less than 30 and retired but have not reached the age of 60. All members of the reserve are subject to recall and mobilization except members of the retired reserve who are disabled. SMCR and IRR are promoted off of the same scores while AR is promoted off of the Active Duty scores. |
