In SOI do you get any time to leave and visit your family or do you stay there the whole time like in boot?

It all depends. We got weekends off, but couldn't go any further then 50 miles. some of us did venture out a bit, but made sure we were within 2 hrs in case we got called back. we had a few try to fly home for the weekend, only to get a delayed flight or cancelled and got royally screwed. if you are wondering about the holiday months... thanksgiving, they got a 72 or a 96 to go home. but not charlie company. for Christmas, same thing, they got a 72 or a 96. those in student admin company got like, 3 weeks. but again, it all depends on the command. quite a few guys brought their families/ girlfriends on base during the weekends, but there is absolutely nothing to do on geiger.

The first couple of weekends we couldn't, but afterwards we were. It was fortunate enough to be a So.Cal Marine. Going home on weekends was never an issue. Getting a ride home was, since we were not allowed to drive until we completed training at SOI.

What about liberty on a day to day basis? If not in the field, when does a typical day's training end and what limitations are students confined to then?

Ha ha ha , some of these questions, my god.

We had platoons, we cleaned up, had inspections and classes on MOS, those who failed, had no liberty, weekends or nightly.
You can hit the EM club or the Beach Club, short trip away, it's the Marine Corps, NOT BAND CAMP.

You are in a school/learning environment, and that's Monday - Friday. The first couple of weekends, you wont be allowed to leave 52-Area (location of SOI), so you maybe or maybe not get privilege for Area Liberty (i.e., the Pizza Shack, Rec-Center, and PX.)

You will be studying, and wont have time for any Libo until the 3rd weekend. However, Liberty is a privilege and not a right while at SOI. Your Liberty could be secured if your company f/ucks up, or if you are picked for weekend duty.

In short, don't plan on having weekends off at SOI. We had liberty twice in two months. Just roll with the punches, when you get free time then do your own thing, but don't be the genious booking plane tickets to see your girlfriend halfway across the country on a liberty weekend at SOI that gets secured (true story).

Hell, liberty anytime in the Corps is not a sure thing. I remember many times in the Corps when it as cut short or canceled for a whole lot of reasons.

If you are an 0311 in SOI, you will spend Monday through Friday in the field. The Weapons MOSes were in the rear more because they had to learn their Weapons Systems, while the 11s refined the skills they learned in the classroom part of SOI. The few weeknights we had in the rear were spent cleaning, studying or just hanging out in the Squad Bay.

'nother question: I have my own barber clippers. Good idea to bring em to SOI and use em for myself and my buddies?

If you do bring' em, you better oil and clean the heads by using disinfectant, and not leave any hairs on my floors.

You're not allowed to do 'barracks cuts' at SOI, but if you're good at cutting, don't worry about it. I knew a few guys that cut hair at SOI. It sucked for Marines who thought they were getting a free hair cut, then end up getting butchered. Gave me a laugh though.

Martin is right, they are not allowed but I would still do them. I cannot tell you how much time is wasted at the barber shop over liberty, when everyone has to get a haircut from the whole battalion. Yes, I got butchered barracks cuts and had to shave my head, boot-camp style, a few times. But I had an extra 4 hours of liberty NOT spent in a barber shop.

If you have the time, head to San Clemente. It is much closer to SOI, and the wait is a lot more shorter then the barber shops in Oceanside.

I usually got mine cut off-base during libo, so I wouldn't have to wait in line forever on base.

When checking into SOI, what cover does one wear with the service A's, service cover or piss cap?

When I was there, people wore both. No one really cared which one you wore. The first thing they did with us was get us changed into cammies. So pack those on the top of your sea bag.
