Hello. I got into the DEP on January 2nd, and read on my contract that I have to serve 4 years Active and 4 years Reserve. Is that so? I thought that a person only had to serve for 4 years minimum. Anyway, if it is indeed 8 years total thats no problem at all. Thanks in advance.

Reread your contract because it might say Four years Active Four years Inactive reserve which is what mine does. I really don't know what inactive reserve is i know you don't have to report in every month or anything like that i think you are basically just like a $hit hits the fan back up to the reserves before we go to a draft.

It's four years active duty, then four years in the Inactive Ready Reserves (IRR).

That is unless you sign one of those Nuclear Navy contracts.

Then it's 6 years active and 2 years...

Irradiated Reserves.

IRR means that you only have to show up once a year to let Uncle Sam know where to find you. Unless you get recalled you are a civilian for 354 days a year.

In my 3 and a half years in the IRR, not once did the Corps contact me in any way, shape, or form.

To add on. . .

Or four years SELECTED RESERVE (i.e. One weekend a month, two weeks a years) and then IRR.

After your obligated time, you can go selected reserve if you want w/o any real obligation. That means you can try it out for one drill or so and if you decide it's not for you, then no feelings hurt. You'll just be on IRR status until your final discharge.
