Hey Marines, I'm in the D.E.P. and I am currently in the process of picking a solid MOS with my recruiter. I was considering 0313 because there was a Marine who came into the office and told me that 0313 guys dont have to hump it everywhere but they get to kick down doors if they want to. Is this true?

Also, I was considering 2111 Small Arms Technician. I was told you just fix guns all day and sometimes gun companies come in and let you test-fire the **** out of their products. What's the deal with 2111?

Can any 0313ers or 2111ers out there give a motivated poolee some insight on how 0313 or 2111 work?

Thanks for your help Marines!

Gonna leave the "kicking in doors" to the current crop, but a little info.

0313 is LAV crewman, which includes driver, gunner and vehicle commander. You start as a driver, train as a gunner, which if your good enough you stay there, as you advance in rank move up to VC.

There are also 0321 which is LAV scout, they didnt have that back in the day, glorified grunts that ride in the back.

It is a blast, hauling through the desert, firing the big gun, etc, but there are also downsides like any other job.

Routine maintenance is the crew's responsibility, keeping it clean, fueled, etc all boring day to day jobs. Just not as demanding as a tanker.

Oh hell yeah 0321 sounds like a blast. Do you have to go from 0311 to 0321 or can you just apply as a primary MOS? 0313 sounds like a hell of a time though. Thanks for the info LAVGuy! Anyone else got any useful tidbits of information for me? Big Grin

0321 is Basic Reconnaissance Man;
not LAV Scout.

Deep, I stand corrected, I assumed with my conversations with some of the 0321's on the "hostile site" that they were all scout's in LAVs.

I was in an Reserve LAV unit (or LAR, whatever they call 'em nowadays) as an 0311 and I was a scout. It wasn't a separate MOS back then - for the scouts, anyway. But LAVGuy is right about the downsides of being an 0313, or being in any MOS where the care and feeding of a vehicle or other major piece of equipment is involved. Fun to ride in and fun to shoot, but not so fun to clean and PM to death. And the shooting part, at least for the reserves, wasn't all that often, anyway - maybe twice a year.

Whenever we were in garrison, it always seemed like there was something needing to be done with the vehicles, done TO the vehicles, couldn't leave until the vehicles were Q-tip-clean, etc. In my experience - having been in LAV's, AAV's, and small boats - any "fun vehicle MOS" comes with a price. Personally, I'd rather walk and have to clean just my own deuce gear Smile.

As far as I've seen from 2111's, I highly doubt they get to fire a gun manufacturer's weapons SO much as to make the MOS worthwhile for that reason alone (how often do you think the Marine Corps actually considers BUYING new weapons enough to entertain gun company reps, anwyay?). I think you'd have to enjoy tinkering with things, fixing things, and being in an armory all day long if you want this MOS.

Be warned that if you choose an MOS based on the one (or maybe two) possible/sporadically-occurring "cool" things that you MAY get to do, you'll probably be unhappy. Look at the day-to-day realities of the jobs and then decide if they're for you.

0313 is a damn good mos, but dont think you can get any job in the USMC that you wont have to hump in. On deployment all of us...01's02's 03's did plenty of humping.

If your trying to get outta humping don't bother joining the Corps.Thats like saying i want to join the Marines but I don't want to go to war.If you become a part of Light Armored Recon great but don't base your choice on not humping because you'll do plenty.

lol don't go 2111.... that **** is horrible. I was made an Armory Custodian when I was with Arty years ago... needless to say... 2111 job is probable one of the dumbest jobs out there.

Artillery brings dignity to what would otherwise be just a brawl.

Of course, if you had no other MOS', "recon and infantry" would be without chow, ammo, medical supplies and personnel, air support, arty, transportation, equipment that functioned properly...

3043 is a supply MOS.

Tell me Michael, what exactly is the MOS of 8014? Did you EAS or are you in fact what your profile says, "Marine Corps , Veteran/Prior Service "?

Nice first post without any introduction. Wink

Theres been a rumour going around that starting in a few years all future LAV scouts will become 0321s, and that all current LAV scouts will be grandfathered into the 0321 MOS. Obviously a rumour is a rumour, but in Mojave Viper it was getting passed around a lot. As far as 0313s go you have to plan for the possibility that you won't even be able to get that MOS. Unless your a reservist, you'll be an open contract 03 at the complete mercy of the Marine Corps needs. I know on the east coast only a few ITB companies even offered guys the option to go west for LAV school, and when they did it was usually less than 20 slots.

Former Scout here. LAV Scouts USED to be supplied from the 0321 community.
