I am going into 3rd ANGLICO as an 0861 if or when I get done with boot camp and was wondering what kind of seperate training, if any, that I would get. Its pretty hard to find any info on ANGLICO at all. I know that an 0861 goes to Fort Still/Coronado for the FO school, but where do they learn about air support etc. I was also wondering how often they are deployed as a reserve unit compared to others.

The wiki on ANGLICO has some general info but does not cover everything.

I am a 0451 at 3rd Anglico and from the 08's they tell me the most recent grads say you get a very basic very fast overview CAS(close air support) at MOS's Schools. But you learn most of CAS with on the job training once you get to the unit. About the deployments the next Detatchment is set to leave sometime in 2009. I take it that you have not had your reserve interview yet? That is when you should ask all your questions. I know sometimes recruiters get really busy and forget things but make sure you go to your reserve interview and nag you recruiter until he takes you. Remember if you become a Marine and get to this unit this is the best oppertunity to get jump wings I suggest if you want them you should work on being able to to 60 push ups in 2 min(make sure you elbows are parallel with you back as you go down. this is important because most Marines that fail the Airborne PFT fail the pushup portion because of incorrect form. when i was at jump school I saw a Recon Marine do over 80 push up and still fail becuase of incorrect form) , 60 sit-ups(not Crunches real sit-ups) in 2 min, and run 15min or better 2-mile run. I just hope you will not be one of those Marines that come to this unit and say "I'm scared to Jump and Don't want to." IMHO-I hate people like that. Why come to this unit if you don't want to jump, becuase there is another non-jump Marine unit close by. Go there if you don't want to jump. Sorry about my rant. My advice about boot camp is mark you name on everthing your issued as soon as you can. good luck at boot camp

Ryan,
Even though you are an 04, check in at the Field Artillery Forum. Your experience with ANGLICO will be greatly appreciated.

I cant tell you if I will be scared shtless when my time comes to jump or not but I do know that it is something that ANGLICO does and is a reason I drove my recruiters insane trying to get into it along with the right MOS. I am actually supposed to have my recruit interview this friday but I didnt want to go into is as some ignorant slapdick that didnt know what he was getting into. The whole ANGLICO mission sounds like one of the best jobs in the Marines to me. I really appreciate the Airborne PFT info, I had no idea what I needed to do for that. I think the running part will be my biggest challenge, but since that is after bootcamp it will not be as bad.

Maybe Ill see you this weekend Smile

You wont see me this weekend because next drill will be the 16th. It's okay to be scare when you jump thats normal, what I hate are people that say the will never jump and refuse to consider jumping, especially for the 08's and 06's it is a waste of a jump billet. And that annoys me because I've seen people re-enlist just so they can wear the lead-sleds(silver jump wing) and never have the oppertunity to get the Goldwings and you have every oppertunty to get goldwings at this unit and you just waste it. Mad
hey 16735261 up above when I was saying "you" i was talking about people in general not you personally. so don't take it like that.

16735261 (and any other wannabees) when you have you reserve interview some of the things you should want to ask are as following:

How often the unit deploys, and when is the next detachment going out because you want to be on it!!!. Wink That'll earn you some points there.

Ask about the unit's mission and basic discription of how it funtions.

Ask about the GI-Bill, and Tri-care benifits- I know these things are always changing so they maybe different than when I check in the unit.

Also ask if there are any other benfits that the reserve's offer. the reason why I say ask this question is because when i was a poolee I did a lot of indpendant research on my own and knew things my recruiter didn't and he sometimes would have me explain it to other poolee's before they DEP'ed in. Remember benfits and programs are always changing in the Corps.

Ask about schools you can attend ie: Jump school, Jumpmasters(don't worry about this one until your a CPL), and SERE(SURVIVE EVADE RESITS ESCAPE) are all big ones in 3rd ANGLICO.

If you want to ask about the Goldwings ask once and no more, and when you ask this is how you ask "What are the requirments for getting the Goldwings?" "Don't say "How do I get MY GOLDWINGS!?" If you do this you will come off as a Badge Hound(someone that wants to have the wings but dosen't want to preform the jump mission, or someone that is so obsrobed in getting the wings in border on obsessive)even though you are not one . Why did I put this in, two words PERSONAL EXPERIANCE.

The second question that is always asked about Goldwings is "How long does it take to get them?" Don't ask this question becasue I will tell you It will be different for everyone. I now a rigger that had to wait almost 5 years to get it while other Marines in unit got it in two months. It depends on a hundred differnt factors.

well I hoped I was some help to you and good luck at boot camp and with the interview.

Dude, jumping is terriyfing...I mean, its not every day you jump out of a violent, moving aircraft like a Jet and go from zero to 120 knots in seconds and then....BAM, your chute opens....However now you must land correctly or suffer the consequences Wink

Its easy stuff dude, I'm former Army and we had about 8 Marines in my class, all of them were riggers or re-enlisted to do Jump School. The most scared guy was probably the E-5 Big Grin

Don't worry, all your jumps will be night jumps so you won't see a thing anyways Wink Big Grin

Haha well to be honest about the wings, I don't know the difference. I kinda look at jumping as just part of what I will be doing, not some badge of pride or whatever.

As for the advanced schools, are those mandatory things that I will be sent to as soon as I report? SERE sounds like oodles of fun Smile

All advanced schools are volenteer only so you actually have to say I WANT TO GO! At least all the ones I mentioned. Don't Think there are any advance schools that you have to go to because there are required, but there are probably some I don't know.

I haven't gone to SERE yet but everyone I've met that has say more or less the same three thing 1. IT SUCKS, 2. IT'S A GREAT SCHOOL, 3. I'D DO IT AGAIN.

So how did the interview go?

The interview went well, it turns out that my recruiter was a DI for the First Sgt waaaay back in the day. The only hitch I have is that per my recruiters advice I signed on as a motor t mos to get into the unit while unbeknowst to either of us there was openings for an 0861. As soon as I found out I asked them to switch it. He keeps assuring me that it will get switched but I am still a little bit wary.

Should I try to delay going to recruit training to get the MOS or do what he says and just let the paper work/process work itself out? I dont want to go to boot and then get stuck wasting time and money in the wrong school.

I know it was a bonehead move on my part =/

Although Motor Transport is an honorable MOS. You want to do whatever you can to be an 0861. I wouldnt have traded it for anything, I loved my job.

My advice is don't ship unless you are happy with what is in your contract. Your DEP contact does not mean squat, If you were promised any bonuses, benifits, MOS's in you DEP contract they don't mean anything when you ship unless they are in your Ship contract okay. If I were you and I had my heart set on 0861 and I had the time to wait until a slot opened up I would. I am going to warn you though if the recruiters and the guys at MEPS try to get you ship without the contract you want they are going to say something like this
"Hey Man(DUDE, HOME BOY, whatever), The most important thing is that you want to be a Marine and the sooner you go to boot camp the sooner you can complete you dream. Most Marines don't get to pick there MOS and have them chosen for them and end up loving them and wouldn't trade them for the world."
The first sentance is absolutly true, the second one is totally dependent on the individual, and as a reservist you get the golden oppertunity to pick your MOS so why let someone else pressure you into picking one that you don't want. As reservist we get rased about being Tampons and such, and the one thing that we slam them with is that we picked our own MOS. Let me give an example. When I was FT Lee, VA for Mos school there were riggers, bulk fuel, and food service guys trainning there. One day the bulk fuel Marines found out I was a reservist and were giving me crap about it so all I said was to them was "Hey How did that whole Combat engineer thing work out." and IF LOOKS COULD KILL I WOULD BE DEAD. because that is what they all signed up for Combat engineer, they thought they'd be building or blowing up bridges and crap and they end up pumping Gas instead. So if you want 0861 and can wait I would. you would only have to wait until Oct. for a slot to open up becaue that is the begining of the Fiscal Year and there are a few 08's leaving the unit.

But if you cant wait I think you should know your options as much as possible

1. Stay Motor-T
Advantages-every unit in the reserves has a motor-T section so this would give you the option of going to any reserve unit in the country if youn wanted.

unless you are tapped to drive most of the time you stay at the trainning center and rarly go out to the field i.e. you stay in a warm bed, don't get dirty, and can go out into town and get beer when you are released.

Disadvantages- If you want jump wings it is very hard of Motor-T to get them becaue they do not have a jump billet, I say it is not impossible it is just harder for you to get them

unless you are tapped to drive most of the time you stay at the trainning center and rarly go out to the field i.e. you don't get to do all the cool field stuff like call for fire, call in CAS and go on patrols.

2. Instead of going for 0861 you go for 0621-field radio operator

Advantages- you get to the unit fast.

As a 0621 you work very closely with the 08's so if you are motivated you can learn the job and prefrom it.

Most units in the Marine Corps Reserves need 06's so you can go alomst everywhere in the country and not have to be retrained.

this is also a jump billet Mos

Disadvantages-
You will not be an 08 and will take you longer before you can do the 08 stuff.

3. you go for 0451-rigger
Advantages- I am 90% sure there should be rigger slots open, because within the next half a year the Paraloft will lose 3 to 4 riggers.they have half heartley told us to start recruiting new riggers.

Jump school is guaranteed so long as you passed the Airborne PFT. A slot at the school is reserve for you and you are at the top of the list. other mos's have to wait until a slot opens.

You rarely go out to the field(see above)

Disadvantages- You will not be a 0861

You rarely go out the the field(see above)

It will be a long time before you can and will be allowed to do 0861 stuff

you can't be a 90 day reservist, you have to be able to complete all training back to back

you have to have a 2nd class swim qual in order to jump

I hope I have been help full and given you some additional options.
