I am leaving in three weeks for bootcamp with a guaranteed MOS of Legal and Personnel Admin. My question is as soon as I become a Lance Corporal may I go on MSG duty? Also what are the requirements and the chances for/of me getting this B Billet. Thanks in advance for your help.

By MSG I presume you mean Marine Security Guard. If your a female zip. If your a male depends on MOS. The one you have is not very likely.

There are a couple I remember offhand:
1. Gotta be a single dude 2. Be in the USMC a minimum of 3 years* 3. Have at least 2 years left on contract* 4. Be able to get TS clearance *--2&3 are not OFFICIAL requirements, but many units (and sometimes MSG school) do not allow thier Marines to even apply if they do not have 2 & 3. Some of my buddies in 2/7 had to extend thier contracts in order to get a MSG slot. |

Actually they are taking females in the MSG program now, and they are taking Marines from all MOSs. |

Fellow Marines,
Please give solid accurate info out if you can......not what you remember to be correct or what the scuttlebutt was when you were in....if you are not sure, look up info online.......then repost and cite your sources as necessary...Apollo, you were pretty close...... For the wannabe....get into the Corps first, stay in the fleet for about 2 yrs, then join.....know your MOS first...then attempt to get orders.......I was in the FMF two years before I applied....also, go to an MSG screening team visit......for their info (screening team), search the MCESC website. Good luck at boot camp.......and before you even think to apply to become an MSG, you had better have some time management skills......trust me. Now, without further interuption: From the Marine Corps Embassy Security Command FAQ page: How do I get orders to MSG School? The first step towards MSG School is through your unit's Career Planner (CRS). Inform your CRS that you would like to start your package for MSG School. For specific questions, contact the MSG Bn Recruiting & Advertising Team (703-432-1391 or 703-784-4861). How long do I have to be on station before I can apply to MSG duty? Contrary to popular belief MSG Bn has accepted Marines with much less than one year on station. Any requirement regarding time on station can be waived. However, MOS monitors usually prefer Marines to be on station for at least one year prior to going to MSG duty. If you are short of one year on station, proceed to complete and submit your package. By the time you receive orders and report to MSG School, you will most likely have one year on station. Aside from the MSG Battalion and your MOS monitor, nobody can deny your request for orders to MSG Bn. Is there a rank minimum requirement for MSG School? NO. There is no minimum rank requirement for MSG School. We are actively seeking PFC's through GySgt's. In fact, Marines who complete MSG School and still hold the rank of PFC will be automatically meritoriously promoted to the rank of Lcpl. MSG Bn no longer accepts Marines above the rank of GySgt. I'm a Sergeant or below and have dependants. Can I do MSG duty? NO. Marines holding the rank of Sgt or below must be single with no dependants. However, those Marines who have children but are not the primary care takers are not immediately disqualified (i.e. paying child support or alimony is not an immediate disqualifier). SSgt's and GySgt's may have up to four dependants to include spouses. Do I need a TOP SECRET clearance to apply for MSG duty? NO. A f inal SECRET clearance or open NACLC is what is required. Our definition of an open NACLC is not a NACLC submitted date on JPAS. It is the parent command's responsibility to ensure the investigation is opened and reflected as such in JPAS. Marines should hand carry a completed hard copy of their SSBI a well as an electronic copy, ESPQ, on a floppy disk. Additionally, two finger print cards are required. We submit the SSBI's here. All paperwork for TS clearances will be done while at MSG school. I heard MSG School is a “P.T. Academy,” do I need a 1 st class PFT in order to do MSG Duty? NO. Contrary to popular belief, MSG School is not a “P.T. Academy.” MSG school consists of both mental and physical challenges. That being said, very few Marines who come to MSG school in good shape are dropped strictly due to physical fitness. Marines thinking about MSG duty should do their best to keep themselves in good physical condition. We can't all run a 300 PFT, but we can all do our best to stay in shape. Marines who fail the initial PFT at MSG School will be dropped. I'm thinking about getting some sort of law enforcement job after the Marine Corps. Will MSG duty help prepare me for this type of employment? YES. The skills acquired during MSG school are much the same as those sought after by local law enforcement departments across the U.S. Aside from those skills acquired at MSG school, MSG's in various posts often work around and in coordination with agents from numerous federal agencies. I want orders to MSG school but my command won't let me go. They say I'm too valuable. Is there anything I can do? YES. Your command cannot deny your request to MSG duty they simply make a recommendation. They still have to submit your package through your career planner. HQMC has the only say as to whether you will receive orders. If someone in your command refuses to let you submit a package, make sure you get it in writing. When I was younger I got into some trouble with the police. Can I still come to MSG school? That depends on what type of trouble you got in. Many, if not most, Marines did a few stupid things before joining the Marine Corps. Many things can be waived or are not serious enough to stop a Marine from coming to MSG school. If you have any doubt, go ahead and start your package. Upon being screened by the MSG screening team, they will find you qualified or unqualified. Drug waivers do not disqualify Marines for MSG duty. If I get orders to MSG School but fail to pass, can I try again? That depends. Several Marines are dropped from MSG school for unique reasons. Many of these Marines are held at MSG school and put into the next class. However, other Marines are sent back to the FMF upon being dropped. It's a case-by-case basis. Bottom line; If you come to MSG Bn prepared and you want to pass MSG school, you will. Think positively! . I heard that MSG's don't qualify annually with the M16, is that true? YES. MSG's are exempt from qualifying annually with the M16. However, MSG's do qualify with the M9 Beretta and 870 Shotgun. They also fam-fire various DOD and DOS weapon systems. What is the toughest part of MSG School? MSG school brings many challenges. Students will be challenged both mentally and physically throughout the duration of the course. Although there is no one piece of MSG school that stands out as the toughest, many Marines have minor problems with managing their time during MSG school. During MSG school you will be expected to learn a large amount of new information in a short amount of time. That being said, MSG students will be afforded every opportunity to study, retain, and conquer the material covered during school. The instructors here at MSG school are dedicated to giving MSG students ample opportunity to pass the course. However, no one will be dragged or slid through the course. Again, attitude is everything; if you want to pass, you will pass. Are Female or Male Marines treated different from one another during MSG school? Marines are Marines, period. Marines reporting to MSG school will be treated equally and fairly no matter what their sex. What uniforms should I bring to MSG school? MSG Students are required to report with their entire minimum uniform requirement. It is not recommended that students purchase several extra uniform items before reporting to MSG school. Reporting with the basic uniform allowance, and ensuring that every uniform is serviceable is all that is required. For further information refer to the following references: (A) MCO P1020.34G (B) MCO 1326.6E (C) MCBUL 10120 Will there be someone at the airport to meet me? How should I get to Quantico? There will be no one at the airport to great Marines arriving for MSG school. All Marines are advised to take a taxicab to Marine Corps Base Quantico. Receipts should be kept to be used for travel claims. Transportation costs will be reimbursed upon completion of travel claim. Do I need to report in Alpha's? YES. All Marines reporting to MSG Bn will be in their Service “A” uniform upon reporting. To clarify, it is NOT acceptable to come to MSG Bn in civilian attire and request to change into Alpha's. All Marines will stand a uniform inspection immediately upon reporting into MSG Bn. Don't be the Marine that reports out of uniform. I have a few tattoos can I still go to MSG School? YES. Having a tattoo, or several, does not immediately disqualify one for MSG duty. However, all tattoos must be in good taste and non-offensive in nature. Tattoos that are racist, sexist or vulgar in any way will not be accepted. For more information, or to ask about specific questions, Marines should contact the MSG Bn Recruiting & Advertising Team (703-432-1391 or 703-784-4861). I received NJP when I was a PFC, can I still receive orders to MSG School? YES. In order to be eligible for a pre-screening interview, you must have no NJP's within the past year. If it has been at least one year since your last NJP, you are eligible for a screening interview. My GT is an 80, can I still get orders to MSG School? YES. The minimum requirement for the MSG program is 90. However, Marines with scores lower than 90 are, in most cases, eligible for a waiver. Furthermore, Marines may re-take the ASVAB in order to achieve a higher score. Do I have to be a US Citizen before receiving orders to MSG school? YES. In order to obtain a TOP SECRET clearance, one must be a U.S. citizen. Marines may be screened for MSG duty as soon as they become a U.S. citizen, no sooner. Can I have a dual citizenship? NO. In order to obtain a TOP SECRET clearance, one must hold NO dual citizenships, but must be a citizen of the U.S. only. My spouse is not a US Citizen can I receive orders? NO. All spouses must be US citizens. However, spouses may hold duel citizenship as long as they are citizens of the U.S. I am only five feet tall do I need a waiver? NO. MSG Bn currently has no height standards. As long as Marines fall within USMC height/weight standards, they are eligible for MSG duty. Do MSGs go to two or three posts? How many posts do Detachment Commanders go to? MSGs will now complete three posts, each twelve months in length. Detachment Commanders will continue serving two posts, each eighteen months in length. I bounced a check when I was younger does this disqualify me? NO. Although all MSG students will have their personal and financial backgrounds thoroughly screened to ensure each student is fiscally responsible and mature, the bouncing of one check will not disqualify one from receiving orders to MSG school. I came in the Marine Corps on a drug waiver does this disqualify me? NO. Having a drug waiver does not disqualify Marines from receiving orders to MSG school. What should I do about TMO before coming to MSG School? Can I bring my T.V., Stereo, and Computer to school with me? NO. Marines reporting to MSG school will do a TMO shipment from their current duty station. Marines must inform their local TMO personnel that he/she will be reporting to MSG school. All personal shipments belonging to Marines reporting to MSG school will be sent to a storage unit in California until that Marine arrives at their first post. At that time, their TMO shipment will be sent to their location. No T.V.s, VCRs, or desktop computers should be brought to MSG school. I already have orders to another FMF unit can I change them to MSG School? Depending upon several factors, including your primary MOS, there is a possibility that your orders can be changed. For specific information regarding existing orders, contact the MSG monitor SSgt Bement at 703-784-9967. |

There is nothing in the world like Embassy duty! But if you're not even going to boot camp until October 09, you've got a long way to go until you get to Quantico. Now it's been quite a few years since I was there but I'm sure it's basically the same. So I hope you like to P.T. and stand barracks and uniform inspections and sit in classes for ten hours a day. As for time managment, you'll have plenty of time to do everything. As long as you're not planning to sleep very much. Maybe four or five hours a night.
It's an awesome school and even better duty once you're out on post. |

FormerEmbassyMarine, What years and what posts? I was Kuwait in 87-88 and Norway 88-89. MSG class 3-87. Looking back on things, I wish I would've extended for a third post. |
