Basic Training |
I'm usually a very honest person, and when I spoke to the recruiter with my friend, he told me everything i had told him would disqualify me for military service, especially Marines. I told him id used drugs, also that I had moderate sports induced asthma. Running is the only thing that EVER bothers my lungs. Participated in tennis, track, gymnastics, etc. He said this is all fine, but I had to pass a drug test ( which i did) and also that I would have to lie my brains out at the MEPs, which I also did. Now I realize, after running daily and conditioning that my asthma may just be a problem, as after about two miles i am almost seeing stars. No joke. Pushups, situps, pullups are easy peasy, but not running.
I already swore my oath, but I am in the DEP. I dont leave for a while. i was curious as to what I might do in this particular situation. I had not known about this forum at the time of my signing papers and swearing the oath, etc. Otherwise i feel i'd be in better position to talk w/ recruiter. I love this country, but I really dont think having an asthma attack at Basic is going to help the USA out at all. Is it possible to change branches, to a less physical based service, or... any options / suggestions?? Or should I just man up, hope I dont have an attack during basic and get kicked out? Man o man. Thanks a lot guys. Appreciate it. This message has been edited. Last edited by: sootybear, |

Artillery brings dignity to what would otherwise be just a brawl. |
DO NOT LIE. PERIOD. End of discussion, this has already been addressed ad nauseum.

Best case (for you)..you have no consience so the lying doesn't bother you. You don't have an asthma attack.
What probably will happen if you make it to boot camp. You'll have an asthma attack and get booted for fraudulent enlistment. Worst case. You have an attack while PT'ing in boot camp and go down. Your DI's will not be aware of a previous medical issue (i.e. asthma) and you die before any medical treament can be applied. You decide what you want to do. Just make sure you tell your parents before you ship off. That way if you die they'll know that it's because you lied to the Marine Corps about your health and not because the Marine Corps doesn't care about recruits. |

Lie your *** off and give it a shot. You cant live forever in regret for giving it a shot but you can for never even trying.
They dont ever find out anything except for DUIs, so dont sweat it and hide your asthma attacks. There will be plenty of slow *** turds at boot that you'll at worst blend right in. |

When I was young and had just joined the Marine Corps I also thought I was invincible. Then as I grew up in the Corps and had to bury Marines that were strangers and some that were friends I realized we are human. Hide your asthma...how do you intend to do that? I have kids now, one of which suffers from asthma. There is no hiding that. So what you have Sooty is many different opinions and recommendations. You are a grown man and can choose your own destiny. Whichever way you go, be man enough to sleep in the bed you made. Again, just tell your parents the truth before you leave. |

I'm a Wannabe, not a Marine. |
Hey,
I just Enlisted yesterday and took the oath. My recruiter also said the same thing. I better lie and say, No and Never. Like I had to lie about my parents not living together. I had to say my mom was on a buisness trip in south carolina thats why they had to send her a form down there to sign for my enlistment. I have never done drugs but have been around them. I'm also afraid that being around weed might have gotten some in me or anything. I have never smoked it but have been around it. It's wierd. The recruiter said if I say yes on one thing im walking home from MEPS. I really dont know, its all confussing. But I'm enlisted now and trying to go with the flow of things. Thanks Marines, -Foley |

You lied about Sports Induced Asthma AND "Running is the only thing that bothers your lungs" What do you think you are going to do a lot of in the Marines? It sure as hell is not walking! In my unit we ran 3 days a week: Monday: Squad leader Run; Weds: PLT Sgt or LT Run and Friday: Co or Bn run Run, run, run, and run! and I was in a Pogue unit. I would noit suggest lying, especially about this. You are gonna be sucking wind on the island when you Asthma flares up and THEN you will be in a world of Shiat! |

Actually, you can "live forever in regret" for lying . I know people who are doing so to this day, from things they said and did 20+ years ago, all just to get into the military without having to get a waiver or to make a recruiter's job easier. But it all depends on what you want more: immediate satisfaction comes with a price, and if someone is willing to pay, so be it. |
