I know I ask a lot of questions but here's another, lol. I qualified for a $5k signing bonus and the Marine Corps College Fund but they arn't on my contract. The signing bonus I'm not really worried about but the College Fund is important to me. Anyways my recruiter says I sign up for the College Fund at boot camp. Is this true?

I think the college fund is open to anyone at anytime, atleast it was like that 20 years ago. If the bonus is not in your contract then I would say you don't get it. When it comes to money it needs to be in there....Any recruiters out there?

The SOU (Statement of Understanding) for the college fund should be in your contract you ship. You will enroll in the GI Bill in boot camp. That being said, just because you qualified for it doesn't mean its available. |

Bonuses vary over time, depending on needs for certain MOSs. I recommend that you get the bonus in your contract before you sign. It should also be understood that an enlistment bonus as well as MOS field is contengent upon sucessful completion of training. Reenlistment bonuses may be available one or more times depending on needs and policy at the time.
As was policy at the time, I received a $10,000 bonus upon my second reenlistment since I had not received a bonus when I first reelisted to go to Vietnam. At that time $10,000 would buy a very nice house in most locations in the country. |

For the MCEF (Marine Corps Educational Fund) you sign a seperate SOU form from your MOS SOU. For the bonus there is yet another SOU you have to inital and sign. So if you don't see those in your contract then you will not receive them. I believe the codes for those 2 are JF and ER...but I can't remember off the top of my head. If you go to boot camp without either of those SOUs in your contract, you won't get the bonus and will only get the MGIB without the 2 kickers (which is what the MCEF is).

Bonuses, college funds, job field/options aren't spelled out exactly in your enlistment contract. They are spelled out exactly in ANNEX'S TO YOUR CONTRACT. When you depped in your are on ANNEX A,B. If you pick a field/option at the time of enlisting, you will be on ANNEX B. But if the job/bonus was not available at the time you depped in, you will get your job or bonus, college fund, etc on ANNEX C of your contract. With these ANNEX'S you will have had to sign SOU (Statement Of Understanding). Basically what I am saying is it really doesn't matter what is on ANNEX A,B..what really matter is what is on ANNEX C of your final contract before you ship off! The recruiter in the meanwhile is talking with their NCOIC and the RS operations about the choices you picked. When everything is available, then you read and sign a SOU for the job field/option, College Fund, bonuses at the Recruiting Sub-Station. You are given a copy of all this once you sign it. When you are shipping off, the MEPS Liaison certifies it and it becomes ANNEX C to your contract meaning it becomes an addendum to your contract. After that you are give copies of your enlistment paperwork and you are sent to MEPS operations to make sure everything you and the recruiter agreed upon is to your satisfaction.
