What are the best MOS's to get into in the Marine Corps that will lead to a high paying job if I decide to get out of the Marines after a term.

You can go recon or sniper, then become a private contractor with a company like blackwater. They pay 500 dollars a day.

Look it up the MOS's on about.com and use common sense. I can understand wanting to learn a trade you can take with you into civilian life but, you should'nt pick your job based on how much you will get paid. You should pick something that will make you happy.

I know non-Marines are not supposed to post in the wannabe forum, but you might want to check out this post before you give an answer. It seems PooleeDEP has already entered DEP for the Marine Corps but now wants to join the Air Force. It appears he now wants to be in air traffic control. I doubt he has told the Marine Corps recruiter about his plans.

WTF, over. You should have done your shopping around before you DEPed. I suggest you have a sit down with your recruiter if you are now having second thoughts about becoming a Marine. I understand that you would like a job that you would be happy in, but give your recruiter a chance to see what he can do for you.
Reserves08, I usually don't comment on things like this, but re-read the rules of the Wannabe forum. |

To simply "go recon or sniper" takes a bit more than simply deciding to do it and then just doing it. That's like telling someone to "go to college and play football, then just 'go' into the NFL." As a Marine in one of these disciplines, you need to be talented and very good at what you do to even get there. And remember that jobs with these contractors were not exactly plentiful before we had a war to fight. Even after 9/11, but before OIF, companies like SAIC really only took the best of the best. Now they hire pretty much anyone with military or law enforcement experience, but thats because they need more people. That need is going to diminish as more companies spring up and as direct combat operations wind down, so that's not really a "career" option. My advice is to do whatever you want in the Marine Corps, because being a Marine looks good on any resume, for any job. Just make sure you do it to the best of your ability. |

DITTO! What job you get after the Corps and whatever dough you make with it will NOT depend on your MOS, but your determination and state of mind. I've shared these stories before I'll share them again. A H.S. buddy of mine served six years in the Corps in ground radio repair. He got out as a Sergeant. He's graduated from college and is now working in genetic research. Not only is he making good dough, the position he holds requires a master's degree! They saw his potential and discipline, something he no doubt picked up in the Corps. Another friend of mine was an officer and helicoptor pilot in the Army. After he got out as a Captain, he held odd-end jobs like (junk) food delivery and cable installation. Yeah, he has the degree, leadership experience, and piloting skills, but he DID NOT apply himself and whatever skills he picked up when he separated. So whether your MOS/rate/AFSC translates 100% into a civilian career or not, what actions you take and how you carry yourself (in regards to how a future employer views you) will nab you that good paying job/career. |

Making an MOS attractive so as to promise someone great job training that will acquire a good job outside of the military is the Army's job. The Marine Corps is not a job training program, never has been, never will.
The Marine Corps is service to your country and Corps, we don't promise you a rose garden or job placement after your time is served honorably. Are there MOSs that translate directly over to a civilian counterpart occupation, absolutely, in some MOSs Marines work directly with civilians that most likely were former military. But if you are looking to select a particular MOS to help set you up for a civilian occupation, I'd advise against it, the Marine Corps is more than just doing your job. You are expected to do that and do it well. There are a lot of variables that can factor into this plan and create a SNAFU. Most of the success of this plan relies on you. Do yourself and the Corps a favor and walk the extra 50 ft. to the Air Force recruiters. |

I have seen people get out the Corps and land a job that is the complete opposite of their MOS. When I first checked in to Fuels plt, Ive seen 1391(Bulk Fuels specialist) get out and become cops, truck drivers, It all depends on your drive, and determination. You have time to really think about your future after the Corps, and the same time to prepare for it. Money can be made in any job. You can google the Marine Corps MOS Manual, and look at all the jobs the Corps has to offer.
