Hey, first post on here. I am going to join the Marine Corp and am talking to my recruiter about jobs. Actually we are discussing that tomorrow so I thought I would do some research.

I seen that there is Instructor MOS's (09XX) that include the martial arts program to shooting to small arms. Now what steps must be taken to be an instructor? Can that be my job from the get go, or is it like being a D.I. and its after a while you can go to a school?

This was the only branch of MOS's that didnt have the acceptable ranks for the job next to it. Thanks for reading this.

Those are all secondary MOS's you may have the chance to earn. For example, getting your Martial Arts Instructor qualification gets a secondary MOS of 0916 (or at least they used to). He may be grunt, supply clerk, mess cook, etc and that is their PRIMARY MOS..but he has the ability to instruct Martial Arts.

Most require you to be in for a few years.

Yeah, I was a PMI (Primary Marksman Instructor). Like Jagges says, you have to earn it. You have to stand out to get some of these secondary MOSs. You can enlist as a Marine Corps Security Force Guard. I did that and it was cool. It's only a two year gig and then you go to the infantry. The infantry is good to go as well.

When I was a Sgt., I requested to be an SOI Instructor. 90% of the instructors are NCO's (Cpl's-Sgt's), with the remainder being SSgt's. The course material we went over were guidelines. Although it was our Fleet knowledge/experience from our deployments which was what we utilized to teach our courses.

Basically anything technical is taught by people within that MOS such as supply, motor transport, engineers, etc. Most anything relating to direct combat is generally taught by infantrymen.

"B" billets are open to anyone who qualifies for them irregardless of MOS. MCMAP and PMI are examples of this. However, if you stick around long enough at some point in your career you'll be assigned a "B" billet to give you a rest from operational duty for three years or so. That's where you'll have a chance to catch your breath and relax at home with your wife and children.
