Well, I talked to my recruiter and I can't join until I'm off of probation and while browsing this site I found out about waivers which is looks like I might have to get from what I've read here. While talking to my recruiter and telling him about my record it looks like I'll be able to join as soon as I'm off probation but reading some things on this sight leaves me a little concerned about me being able to join as he wasn't to specific about my eligibility.
First a little about my record.: Possession of Drug Paraphernalia with Intent to use -Marijuana -M4 Criminal charge -Was 18 but still in High school -Sentenced May 25th of this year -Received 5 days in jail 1 year probation and 6 month license suspension. Probation Violation: -Failed drug test for marijuana -Plead no contest -Was ordered more drug tests before sentencing -Don't smoke anymore now passing tests -July of this year Driving Under Suspension -July of this year -awaiting trial -Don't drive on my suspended liceans anymore OVUAC (operating vehicle under age alcohol consumption) -Only blew a .039 so I wasn't able to be charged with a DUI since I would have had to have blown a .08 -Don't drink anymore -July of this year happened at same time a the DUS -awaiting trial Well that's my record. I don't drink, smoke, or drive on my suspended license anymore. I told my recruiter about them and he said that my probation and awaiting trials were TEMPORARY DQs but after reading somethings and posts on this site I am worried that I still wont be able to join even after going to trial and getting off of probation. |

Right! You stopped all of that. Come back in a year and see if you can still say that. |

Youre not going to join any branch of service until ALL charges are completely adjudicated,,,IE all fines paid,, probation completed,

Or in other words I can't become a Marine? My recruiter said they were only temporary disqualifiers. I hope that I still find some way to join but I understand that I probably can't. I want to serve my country and protect the freedom of our country and the freedom of others.
I understand what your saying by coming back in a year and see if I can still say that. Honestly I was stupid and ****ed up badly in high school jail made me realize where my life was going and the true value of freedom. I am confident I will be able to keep it up because I have to to be a Marine and I am determined to become a Marine no matter what. I know it may appear that I am trying to argue with you but I am not. |

And your name is Gotti? Lord have mercy Son. Screwed the pooch isn't anywhere near what you're facing.
The bad news is you have drugs in your official police record. Drugs is a big no no in the Corps and they back it up with random UA's all the time. I'm not going to sugar coat this so here it is: you're a toss up at best to get in. The good news for you is the Corps is currently engaged in a very nasty unpopular shooting war in Afghanistan so if the recruiting numbers are down they may give you a shot. Recognize that one third of all Recruits who get off the bus at our Recruit Depots fail to graduate by program design so you may be allowed to enlist simply to be one of those that don't make it. Again, I'm not sugar coating this because you have the right to know the truth so you can make a better informed decision in whatever lifepath you choose. All I can say is you're not the first nor will you be the last "marginal type" to hit the yellow footprints if the powers that be allow you the chance to try. You're the type who usually does very well because anywhere you're going is better than anywhere you've been so all I can say is give it all you've got if you make the cut and get in. If you do get the opportunity, it's totally up to you with what you do with it. I'd say go for it. What the heck, you've got nothing to lose as all they can do is say no and everything to gain if they say yes. God be with you and best of luck Son. Don't take no for an answer. It's kind of how we Marines think because failure is never an option for us. |

Actually my name is Gatti no relation to the Gottis. I was able to take the practice ASVAB and scored an 80 so hopefully that means I will score the same on the ASVAB which would definitely help.
Thanks for the advice. All of the fines are paided in full and if I continue to pass drug tests and stay out of trouble I will be released from probation early. I'm in collage now and WILL be getting very good grades. I've developed a daily work out regiment to help prepare me for boot camp and to keep me out of trouble and the local recruiters have a PT program which I will be taking part in and that my recruiter will be at. I'll post the work out regiment so I can hopefully get some advice on it. Thanks for all of your responses and help guys. |

What all are saying is true, no service branch can touch you until your probation is up. What can you do in the meantime - talk to community people (clergy, school teachers, policeman, neighbors, etc) who CAN and WILL say a few good things about you in a "character statement."
Get employed, finish school, etc. Its up to you to present to the Marine Corps that you can abide by our Corps values. Its a long shot but you have a lot of work to do. Get moving!!!! |

Alright, one more question.
When I go to court for the DUS and the OVUAC I will get the option to drop one charge or the other and plead no contest to the other. I was wondering which one it would be better for me to drop in order to increase my chances of my waiver being accepted. This message has been edited. Last edited by: LifeOfService, |

Just an idea kid:
Find out if there is a Marine Corps League Detachment in your area. If there is talk to the Detachment Commandant about your situation. See if you can join as an associate member. Start helping out with their community events, fundraisers etc. Bust your a&&. A letter from the Detachment Commandant won't hurt your file! Good luck |

I have located one that is fairly close. It's strange I thought there would have been one in Cleveland but Medina is still fairly close I will be contacting them tomorrow since it is rather late to do tonight.
Thanks for the advice. |

If you arrange a meeting with him dont show up with your pants falling down your a$$ and your hat on backwards.
Dress to impress and you will be trying to impress a salty old Marine. |

I don't dress like that normally. I always dress to impress because I find that it helps me out in life.

Something else, did you graduate high school? or do you have a GED, Tattoos? anything of that nature? all of these things are looked at when waivers are run.
