Just took the plunge on a BY option.

I'd like to get some information from anybody who has done any of the 21XX, 28XX, or 59XX MOSs.

  • What was a typical day like?
  • What were your typical duties?
  • Did you have a lot of free time or were you swamped with work?
  • Did you feel like there was a lot of variety or was it pretty monotonous?
  • What is the promotion rate like?
  • How did other Marines see your job?
  • Are there a lot of post-service opportunities in civilian life?
  • Lots of cross-training?
  • Would you do it again if you had the choice?
  • What was your overall satisfaction level?

Again, since this is just the option I could be doing pretty much anything in 21, 28, or 59. So if you've done any of those jobs your advice will be helpful.

Thanks in advance2!

21XX is armory. You work on weapons not electronics. If you get to be an optics tech you will get to work on electronics.

28XX is ground electronics maintenance.

59XX is airwing elecronic maintenance.

Almost all of your questions depend on the unit that you go to.

Thank you, but all of this info is readily available with a google search. I knew all of this. I chose the BY option because I am interested in electronics and mechanics. If you notice in my post above, I did not inquire as to what the official title of each option was. I asked very specific questions from people who may have performed one of the myriad jobs within the larger category.

I understand that the answers to many of those questions will vary depending on the job I do and the unit I'm assigned to.

Again, I was asking for personal, first-hand experiences. Please answer the questions I actually asked.

Buzz off you arrogant clown...you want specific answers to a wide range of things and we really can't give them...here's the basic...once you get out of school, you'll spend most of the day working your job. That's broken up by formations, field days, mealtimes, sleep at various times of the day and so on. Then there's PT and PFT. You'll be expected to be squared away and keep fit. You will be responsible various types of training after you are with your units. OK, should I go on about deployments....No? Don't get attitude when you get into this for real or you'll be slapped down.

I didn't mean to be disrespectful nor have attitude. Again, I'm looking for somebody who has done one of those various jobs to answer some of the specific questions I posted.

If you didn't do one of those jobs, then there is no need to even post. I didn't ask about deployments. I understand that I'll be working my job most of the day, what I was wondering was a more specific, first-hand explanation of somebody's personal experience working that job. I understand that there is time to eat and time to sleep. I was asking, again from somebody who has performed that specific job, specific information about that job.

Has nothing to do with attitude nor being arrogant. I'm just asking straightforward questions and looking for straightforward answers.

A helpful answer would follow the lines of:

"Hi, I performed 5948, Radar Tech. I found that I and most other guys in the wing doing tech were promoted pretty quickly. We got a lot of respect from the pilots. Work days were pretty rough, long shifts with very little free time. The job was pretty monotonous. I mostly worked on the same system every day. 59XX might be a good one for some more variety, I noticed. Good news is that there are TONS of civilian opportunities after the service. I was very satisfied with the job and would gladly do it again."

This is just an example. But if you notice, it actually answers the questions in my initial post.

1st off, notice the words Marine and Moderator under my name?

2nd, your in our house asking us questions. You better be a bit more respectful of the Marines in the forum if you ecpect to get them answered.

Any Questions on this? Oh by the way, you'd best listen to us or you just might get time out like when you where in Elementary School.

Now if you noticed I'm the Marine Air Wing Moderator so now try again and ask me your Air Wing Questions and I will do my best to answer them. I can not honestly answer questions in other fields, I have no idea on how they do their jobs. Hopefully you have not pi$$ed off other members who just might have been in those fields and they may jump in. If not google is your best friend... GET IT!....

Way wrong attitude!

However, I did do one of those (2815) so I can answer.

"Hi, my MOS was 2815, KW-7 Crypto Technician. I found that I and most other guys in the wing doing tech were promoted pretty quickly, unless they were arrogant clowns. We got a lot of respect from others, unless we were arrogant clowns. Work days were pretty rough, long shifts with very little free time, expecially if we were arrogant clowns. The job was pretty monotonous, if you were an arrogant clown. I mostly worked on crypto but after I was promoted, I worked on a variety of systems however arrogant clowns were stuck with simple tasks. 28xx might be a good one for some more variety, if you are especially arrogant. Good news is that there are TONS of civilian opportunities after the service, unless you were an arrogant clown. Even civilians aren't thrilled with arrogant clowns. I was very satisfied with the job and would gladly do it again. Satisfaction felt by arrogant clowns might vary. "

Hope this helps.

My comments didn't come from a desire to be disrespectful nor arrogant. I won't waste time arguing or trying to "defend" my position. I have nothing to defend. I recognize that it is less about my intent and the more important matter is how my comments have been perceived.

I'd like to apologize for any disrespectful remarks. I will take care in the future to be more cognizant of my position here.

I'm taking my service very seriously, especially the job I will likely be performing for the next few years of my life and where it will lead me in my future. I did not come on here to swing my dick around. I am simply looking for straightforward answers to specific questions. Again, I apologize for the way I've gone about seeking those answers.

I hate them, too. Familiarity breeds contempt.

Copy that. I spent more than my fair share of elementary school in time-out. Wink

Any first-hand information on the 59 jobs you can provide would be greatly appreciated. The questions in my topic post cover my main concerns.

F&&k if I know.

----------

I have a followup question for any Marines who still deign to assist me:

If I wanted to move into EOD, am I more likely to be considered as a candidate having done any of the 21, 28, or 59 jobs? Would there be a better job that would make me a better candidate? Any other tips for making myself the best candidate possible for EOD?

I am highly interested in EOD in the future.
