Alright so i finally enlisted, and am set to ship out in June. I recently turned 23 and am happy that i didn't enlist straight out of high school because i've grown up alot since then and think my maturity will be a big help. Originally i had planned on going Army, but because i'm colorblind, they wouldn't take me for the job i wanted. My question is, once i'm out of boot camp, will my age make a difference when it comes to being promoted and getting chances to go to different schools? I wasnt really worried about my age when i joined, but the other day my dad (retired Army) mentioned that he thought i may run into issues with having guys that are my age or younger that have already been in for 4+ years being my boss and not giving me the same opportunities that the younger guys get, i.e. felling "threatened" or not liking me because of my age.
Thanks to anybody that can give me any input, it is greatly appreciated. I apologize, its probably not the most important question you guys have ever gotten, but this has been on my mind since my dad mentioned it, so I thought i'd see if i could get some input here. Thanks again for any help.

I was a "late bloomer" too. Just remember this, do whatever you can to pick up rank as quickly as possible without polishing knob and you'll do fine.

As for the part of not having the same opportunities because of younger superiors, you will certainly get an extra load of crap to carry , but that's about it. Get that out of your head, the Marine Corps will provide you with plenty of opportunities to shine and stand out if you want them, you just have to go get it...in fact if your are a mature individual and your higher-ups see that they are going to give you ample chances to stand out and take more responsibility to lead...

And learn the meanings of the words "bearing" an "tact", you're gonna need to master these...especially as an older "boot", good luck.

Age is not factored into your cutting score, which largely will decide your advancement. Will some bosses (SSgt & Gunny) recognize maturity if it exist, sure...but some may not and let you solely rely on what you resemble on paper.

At 23 you shouldn't have a problem physically, you should be in your prime athletically. Then there are the other factors that contribute to your promotion...performence and conduct.

Short answer is no, you will not get promoted quicker because of your age. I went in at 26 and got off my first contract (4 years) as a Cpl and that was only because I was awarded a meritorious promotion 8 months before my EAS.

My age, regardless of maturity or level of responsibility I displayed did not increase my cutting score in a field that was closed for promotion the first 18 months I was in the fleet.

WHAT?

I had a ton of guys and girls that worked for me that were older than I. I was never the one with the issues, it was them. I always went at it like this.

Older person- I ain't listening to you. I'm XX number of years older.

Me- You don't have to respect my age, but you will respect my rank.

Older person- Or what?

Me- Or I'm gonna drag you butt outside and whip your azz.

True story, I had a clown that claimed to be prior French foregn leagion, bad azz that was older than me. He threatened to whip my azz. After I jumped up and kicked him as hard as I could in the chest, they carried his sorry azz to sick call where he found out he had 4 broken ribs. Shouldn't have messed with a younger prior 0311. HM, give me a few minutes to think about it. I know at the time we were both 2818's. He was a Cpl and I was a Sgt. I thought my azz was grass, luckly my Plt Cmdr and Master Gunns were both prior 03XX's from the Vietnam era. The time frame would have been the 1989 zone.

Back in 1991, there was a recruit in my platoon who use to be with the FFL. His name was Willy Orozmen. He left the Legion to marry a WM SSgt. That marriage didn't last too long.

He must have gotten tired of her owning his azz, or she wanted a real man. Big Grin

Until that day "I" had never had a problem with him. I had heard from the troops that he would threaten people, but he never did it to me.

I've never worked with the FFL before, but I know the British Royal Marines don't think very highly of them. Don't even get them drinking and talking about them. Oh and BRM love a good scrap also, that's why I respect them.
