I've been running a mile to a mile and a half 3 times a week lately, and I've noticed a slight pain in my right shin. I pray it's not the beginnings of a shin splint, but just in case, I'm taking it easy and avoiding as much running as I can. I've started swimming instead, and I'm looking at biking.

Does anyone have any suggestions of other activities that are cardio related, but don't involve a lot of lower leg stress. I'm trying to keep my lung capacity up, and any suggestions are really appreciated.

Also, anyway to keep this from happening again. I probably need a new and better pair of running shoes (suggestions for those would be nice too.)

Thanks in advance guys.

i'm a running fool, so i'll help this individual out.

do you run on concrete? while you're training, stay off the concrete. blacktop is better, but not much. running on dirt or sand is the best for that pain you're feeling.

do you stretch before you run?

are you out of shape? is the impact of your feet hitting the ground a new feeling for you? if you're only running a mile to a mile and 1/2 perhaps you should start off by walking 3-5 miles a day to prepare your feet for the impact and to stregnthen your heart and lungs. great cardio workout.

how old are your shoes? as far as recommending a pair, you need to find a pair yourself that works for your budget and your feet.

personally, i'm an adidas man, but everyone has their own preference.

if possible, go to a store that specializes in selling running shoes. foot locker and champs specialize in selling t-shirts and jerseys, so don't go there.

replace your shoes at least every 6 months.

swimming is a good alternative, but based on how long you're running, you probably won't get much out of some pool time.

biking is good too, but nothing can replace the feeling of your feet hitting the earth.

to relieve the pain in your shins, point your toes out and simulate writing the ABCs with your big toe. if symptoms persist, see a doctor.

good luck
