I have decided to join the marines. im 19 years old. however I need help deciding my mos. What i desire is to be infantry. I have a brother in the navy now who worked with marines as a coreman and then went into special forces. he tells me that i will not like the infantry, and that i wont get good skills to come out with other than to become a cop or something of that sort.
So my question is this.
What mos could be close to the same job as infantry but with a sweeter skill. if there is one.

also some other questions if anyone would like to help me out.

what is the job of a LAV crewman in iraq.
and same with the assault amphibious vehicle crewman

any help is greatly appreciated.

Not only that, but there are very few military jobs that are going to get anyone a "sweet" skill from only a single enlistment, so I'd simply enlist to do whatever it is you want to do while you're in the Marine Corps., not so much with an eye on what you'll do later on.

As far as grunts only having the skill to be cops, that's a 1950's mentality. Grunts don't make any better cops than admin clerks... or vice versa.

Again, unless you're trying for one if a handful of highly-specialized positions, just take the MOS that interests you the most and the be the best at it that you can.

i dont want you to get the wrong impression. im not looking to do a single enlistment. my father was in the navy for 20 years and my brother rounding 10. i want to make a career out of it. its just hard to figure things out when all i have is navy invoice. reading through these forums has helped alot. its good to hear opinions from marines. i hope to be with the rest of you soon!

One of your peers just asked about the 0313 mos a few days ago. I suggest you look down a bit and read what we had to say.

Being in the grunts won't develop any specific skills that are applicable to the real world. It will however develop thoose intangibles that lead one to be successful in any career and as a human being in general.

Since the above is your second post, I will provide you with the requisite: Click HERE. When I first enlisted, I had all intentions of making the Marine Corps a career. But guess what? Life happened. Although I find it admirable that you have long range goals, be flexible in those goals. Like Bliss says, being in Infantry or any Combat Arms field may not leave you with specific skills that easily translate to the civilian world, there are many things that you learn that employers are looking for.

Look for an MOS that you think you would enjoy doing, if you enjoy your job, that's what really matters.

even if you get into an MOS that is more technical, it guarantees nothing in the civilian world.

in the end, very little you do as a Marine will directly translate to a civilian job.

in my last job, when i had an opportunity to interview job candidates, i would scroll through the resume and if i see any type of military experience. if they did it was a plus no matter what their MOS was or what job they applied for.

listen to what Dan Spitz said. choose an MOS based on what you want to do for the next 4 years.

even if you make the Corps a career, chances are you won't do the same job for 20 years. you could get orders to DI/recruiter duty, or lat move into another field.

Gunny Brown hit it right on the head as well. don't do something because your brother said so. he may be a Corpsman, but he isn't a Marine.

I'm staying optimistic that I'll be able to find a tanking job on the civilian side.

Rofl Voodoo good one! Big Grin

William do not count your eggs before they hatch. You may get there and realize the service is not for you.

The Military lifestyle is one that many desire but once get there get a whole new perspective on the word sacrifice and what it means!

Do what you want or what interests you or otherwise you may hate your life and resent the service due to what someone else has told you etc.

You young fellas need to realize its your time to shine and for once choose what you wanna do in life instead of being told to do this or be influenced into doing that etc..

Make a stand and lead your own life or otherwise you may end up living someone elses life and regretting it.

Good luck in your decisions in life.

Freaking wrong! This is where most Marine FU. They get out of the Corps and they think they have jack zhit to offer in the civilian world. The leadership skills you learn in any MOS put you heads above all of the civilian pukes who just partied for 4 years.

I don't care if you were a Lance Coolie, Cpl, or SSgt. You will be hands down above your peers.
