It seems to me, from all the stuff I've researched on the contract for your MOS, that you really don't have a choice in the matter. All I read and hear people talk about is an "Open Contract" where the Marine Corps chooses your job for you. I know you get three choices for the jobs you'd like to have, but it sounds to me like there's a good chance that I wouldn't get that job, b/c the Corps just puts you where it wants you.

Is there any real guarante that I'll get the job I want? All the stuff I hear about contracts is kind of confusing to me. So please help.

If you go active you can be given your Occ field choice, such as 03XX, 30XX, 28XX, 75XX and such. Keep in mind if you fail (ROCK) your school the Marine Coprs will place you where ever the hell they need you.

If you go reserves you will need to pick a certin MOS at a Reserve center near you.

You also need to keep in mind that if the Marine Corps does away with your MOS (happens all the time) they will make you what they wish.

The bottom line is "It is always the good of the Corps that comes first". That is why every Marine knows the term "Semper Gumby" (Always Flexible). Cool

I've heard that it may be hard to get an infantry job because it's so full. I want to go in as an 0311 or 0321. I don't want some desk job the rest of my career!

Don't worry, even if you're not infantry, you'll have a chance to do some combat training when you're not doing your primary (non-infantry) MOS. Afterall, "Every Marine a RIFLEMAN."

In my first unit, I was in supply. I supported a light armored infantry unit (has since been re-designated light armored reconnaissance). When I wasn't doing supply ops, or if they were all caught up, I had the opportunity to do some grunt training. I even got to drive a Light Armored Vehicle once!

Yes if you're not imnfantry, you will have a primary MOS that you must perform and work well. But every Marine is combat ready first and foremost. Your unit will see to it that you are up to date on your combat training.

Even if I do get some job I don't like, after a while, can I try to get another one? If I get sent to some desk job, after being in that job for a while, say some infantry jobs open up. Could I get the chance to try to get that infantry job after having that desk job for a while?

Yes, every Marine is a basicly trained Rifleman. Don't look past this as a fall back MOS, which I think are tring to do (remember Jesters false beliefes prior to boot camp?).

About the only way to change your MOS is to enlist for it. You can submit all the MOS change forms you want but if costs the MC any money it will get circlur filed quickly. Good example would be your a 0311 and see that you liked my mos primary 6055 Harrier Hydraulics. Well submit all the MOS change forms you want but you anit getting it unless you re-enlist for it. However, if I want to re-enlist for 0311 as a 6055, it anit happening as a 6055 is a harder to get MOS with I already have. Get it? You young skull filled full of mush?

But if I want to become a HUD tech for a Radar Tech I could re-enlist for that....

But if VMA-231 is deployed to a forward area and it is over ran don't expect the grunts to be on the way ASAP. They just might be busy shooting at the bad guys headed our way. So now your basicly trained Rifleman stuff comes into play. It's been that way for 100 years, dont expect it to change MR PFT Chanlenger Wannabe.... Big Grin Gun

Thanks for all the info. I would love to be a Reconaissance Man or a Scout Sniper (but my eyesight may not be 20/20, cause at my last full physical for sports, I had a VERY hard time reading the small letters at the bottom, and I know you need 20/20 vision or better to be a sniper), but if that can't happen, I would settle for a Rifleman. I just don't want a desk job!

You really have no clue do you? Although I wasnt a grunt, "settling for rifleman" shows how much you really dont know. I will let my grunt brothers address this, but you need to shut up and just read for awhile.

BTW, do you know where most of the Recon Marines and Scout Snipers come from? Yep, Riflemen.

You WILL be a rifleman.
Every Marine is a rifleman.
Women Marines are riflemen.
That way when somebody attacks you you can kill them and go back to cooking lunch or fixing the AMTRAC or filling out rosters without losing time. It's about efficiency.
If you have the ability to do technical work the Corps will train you for whatever jobs it needs.
Like previously posted, the Corps will do with you what it needs to.
"Choice not Chance" is somebody else. Wink
