Good Morning, I'm currently a college student enrolled in the NROTC as a Marine Option. It's not what I want and I'm dropping it after this year. I'm going to enlist as a Reservist, for personal reasons and hopefully as an Assaultman or Rifleman. I would like to know more about the PLC Program from people who are in it. I know a little bit about the program but I want a firsthand opinion. Thanks.

Are you on the scholarship? Before I give you PLC info, what's buggin you about NROTC? (I ask about the scholarship because NROTC is one of the best deals around if you want to go to college and become a Navy or Marine officer.)

Good call gunny! To the OP, Looks like you accepted this scholarship blind. Do you really want to be an officer? If you do, then see what you can get out of NROTC. If not, drop NROTC and don't even bother with PLC. From your previous posts, it's clear you're unsure about what your goals are. You should have declined it from the get go if you didn't have any goals. |

To be honest. I want to stay in college and get a degree. NROTC itself isn't bad, it's just not what I was looking for and it's not what I want. However, I am doing it to help out my family financially because I do not want to burden my parents and have them work even harder to send me through school. To be honest, my goal is to be a Marine.

While it's understandable that you want to help your folks and yourself out with the college puke costs, that's not a good enough reason to have the NROTC scholarship. Perhaps that is why you don't like it [NROTC] so much? Then you need to decide if you want to lead Marines as well. Again, NROTC is one of the best deals around. Sure, it's light years away from the real Navy or Marine Corps, but at least you have some intro and you'll get your schooling paid off. If you don't want to be an officer (and you have decided at that point after a lot of soul searching and thought), then you better leave NROTC. Isn't it after a certain point, you have to pay back that money of you washout and/or don't accept your commission? PLC is just as good a deal, only they don't really pay for your school (and your goal in life still better be to be an Officer of Marines). They have some tuition assistance, but it's not going to cover all your college costs. You want to continue in college, but you want to drop NROTC. What's your backup tuition payment plan? |

I have TOPS. I live in Louisiana. I already talked to my parents about it. They said that if it's not what I want then so be it. I'm going to go enlisted. As for paying back money for the scholarship. I can go to school for, I believe it's 2 years, 1 for sure, and then drop the program and not have to pay anything. I know the Reserve's have GI Bill. It's very little money but it's better than nothing.

I dont know what TOPS is. Get whatever you can out of NROTC and above all keep your grades up otherwise, as you know, you'll be dropped from the program. I've known people who were dropped from NROTC because they failed to meet the academic requirements. Then leave the program with your head held high! Good luck! |
