there aren't really any tricks. it just takes time.

make sure you stay hydrated.

have a good diet that includes lots of fruit and vegatables.

also, what was the poolee (the one who runs 6 miles) doing before he decided to join? was he running on the track team/cross country team? was he an athlete of some kind?

what were you doing before you decided to join?

if you spent years being a couch potato before you decided to join, it will take some time to get in shape. even going through boot camp won't do it alone. fitness is a process that takes years.

get into a workout routine where you run no less than 4 times per week. when you lift weights, use less weight (50-60% max) and more reps (ie 12-15) and do exercises like lat pull downs and incline bench press. also get in some ab work everyday.

In addition to Caesar's post; after a workout, you want to take in some simple carbs and proteins to help faster muscle recovery. A good source of simple carbs are most fruit juices like orange juice. If you get some whey protein from gnc that's a good for your post workout protein...or you can eat more fish/chicken

Ceasar and the Lt have good points. When I joined in the summer of 78 we did not have the internet or blogs to ask things about. I wish I had been in better shape and did not smoke when I went to Boot Camp in 1/79, it would have made PT much easier. I was not held back and did what was required along the way but could have done it better had I started of in better shape. If you use weights do for the toning of your muscles not building them to be big. Do youe daily seven calisthenics, work on a mile run and work up to 3 miles, work on your crunches and pull ups. All of this is what you need to work on......

Well Im currently 5'10'' 176lbs and running about 4 miles every-other-day in boots and sweats and I can do about 12-15 pullups (palms facing out). Im not fat but I am trying to lose weight as I figure that if I lose weight running/calisthenics will become easier. My average mile time is about 10mins (boots and full sweats) though I have done 1.5miles in 13:42 and 13:50 on several occasions.
