Hi I am considering enlisting in the Marines and I was wondering what the Drill Instructors look for when choosing the series honor man.

Son! First off, I give my full respect to "Series Honor Man", let alone the Honor Man for each Respected Platoon. Don't seek for what "they" are looking for, look inside for what "they" seek! Leadership! Graduating Bootcamp is a Lifetime Achievement! This experience will be with you always! The Marine's will be with you Indefinitely!!!

thank you for answering SGT. I also would like to know, are all series honor men LCpl out of recruit training or are some PFC?

I went to Bootcamp with no College background. I had no prior enlistment guarantee. I graduated Bootcamp as a PVT. Some who go to Bootcamp have an enlistment guarantee. It just depends. If you have a PFC guarantee and you become "Series Honor Man" you will most likely become an E-3.

Although you have a great goal, there is only one Series honor man per 4 platoons (which is a Series), and only one guide per platoon. The odds are not with you my friend, you have to be the best of the best.........

Well I was going to make a post on this, but apparently this guy has removed his account.

MOD's, when you have a chance, you may as well close this thread unless you deem it necessary to leave open.

Not that I am being a d i c k about this, but I just wanted to mention it. My little neurosis.

Anyway, I guess I will put forth my $0.02. Work hard and be a good Boot and there may be a chance for you to be a Series Honor Marine or something else which gives you a form of prestige and excellence over some other recruit. As said before, work hard and keep you motivation high and you will fill the billet. As for obtaining some advancement in rank, I don't know how that works anymore. Our Series Honor Marine was given the rank of Private First Class with Honors upon graduation. To any Graduating Marine, that is a high enough honor over anything else. The rest of it comes when you join the Fleet.

If you bust your rump, show and execute leadership amongst your fellow recruits, and do well enough on quantitative items such as PFT and rifle range, you may be lucky enough to be a meritorious PFC out of boot camp.

But on a personal note, I would NOT want to be a meritorious LCpl out of boot camp. In my opinion, that just sets the meritorious LCpl up for some embarrassing failures when he gets to the FMF and is expected to perform at a level higher than a PFC...and possibly to lead/supervise PFCs (who will have more experience and skills than he would).

That doesn't mean that once in the Fleet, a PFC who busts his/her rump and picks up meritorious LCpl after a few months isn't special. They are. But take it one grade at a time...

Strength, leadership, a loud voice, the ability to lock on the retards who can't get with the program, intelligence, a good reason to be there...luck. If you have beta male tendencies, you won't be selected. Although, I think I remember one of the other guides crying when he didn't get company honor man. Figures he went POG.

I graduated company honorman and as a LCpl. Everybody else was PFC or Private. Felt pretty gangster being the only dude out there with crossed rifles.

Seriously to the OP. While your goal is well taken. Just worry about earning the title. Do every thing your told to do, and do it as fast and best you can. Then it will all fall into place.

Best of luck

Opps, I'm on a 96 and going to go fishing in the north woods...I hate Lake Erie, it has too many dead fish in it.

I know this is an old post, but I searched and found what I was looking for but I have one question, so Ill just use this topic.

One of the above posters said be able to lock on the retards.

Does this just mean assume a leadership stance and maybe let them know what they are doing isn't acceptable? I know within the group it might make one seem like an ass, but hey if it helps to earn such a distinction! Razz

Forest Gump said it best, stupid is as stupid does. From what I've noticed is those who try overly hard to be the leader fail. You can be overly grungy to the point it hurts you. Grungy does not work in the Air Wing due to what we deal with, fixing multi million dollar Air Craft.....

Just do better than your best at Boot without looking like you are getting on your knees. The more you prepare, the better off you will be. Don't let your ego or lack of confidence blind you. Have a sense of some humility but don't be weak. And never have a disagreement with any of the DIs, especially the senior. You are and will be a maggot until after graduation.

As a series honor man, you will be challenged in all categories of a true Marine.

I wish you all the luck, not that I think you will not get it, only because of the uphill machine gun infested battle you will have.

Sometimes DIs pick some of the dumbest people in the world to be squad leaders and etc or basically people who you think should not be there. Do not let this disappoint you and not cause you to lose focus on what is most important - Becoming an UNITED STATES MARINE.

Damn this post is old - wtf!

Well anyway, this is for all of you wannabe Series Honor Men\Women... Wink

Haha yea, well it's something to shoot for anyway. I wouldn't expect to get it, but to keep it in the back of my mind may give an extra push. That is if I decide on enlisted instead of officer, which I am starting to learn towards because I want to pick my MOS area and want to be more involved in the action. The last thing I would want is to be some office admin lol.
