What should a 2nd LT. expect after ocs. can't find to much on it. All I can find is more training.

That about sums it up...more training and then more training.
then confusion and bewilderment. a lot of people looking at you like you've lost your mind. Then at some point an angry platoon on a land navigation course. More people looking at you like your crazy. Eventually you get promoted and less people look at you like your crazy, but just a few. pvt's and pfc's will jump at the sound of your voice, LCpl's a little less quickly, cpl's will try to avoid you, Sgt's will mess with you, and Staff NCO's might occasionally ask you to have a conversation behind close doors. |

Well, the simple version:
After OCS: The Basic School, 6 months at Quantico. Learn everything you need to know to be a basic Marine Officer. Not like OCS (most of the time). Nights/weekends off for the most part. Paid as a 2nd LT. Here you are ranked and you get your MOS (Job Specialty) towards the end. After TBS you go to your MOS school. You will already have been told what unit you are going to be going to after MOS school. If there is a wait til the class picks up, you may go to your unit to do on the job training. The school could be a few weeks to a few months. These schools can be at various Marine, Navy, or Army bases. This is when you would go to Flight School as well. After MOS school, you will report to your unit. You are looking at least 7 months or so after commissioning. I highly suggest going to www.marineocs.com and introducing yourself there. |

You will be welcomed with open arms at your first posting. They've been waiting for a new mess officer. Enlisted personnel will, when they see you coming, adopt a tactical spacing so that you will be required to return the salutes and greetings of each of them, therefore you will never be able to scratch higher than your navel for 6 months. After this period your right trapezius muscle will resemble Popeye's forearms. You will have lots of neat new nicknames.
After you endure this with panache and grace for a few months you will be accepted as a reasonably broken-in 2nd Lt. and can get ready to greet the next mess officer with proper decorum. Semper Fi. |

I wont lie, I don't feel like doing it all over again. I guess when you know what you wanna do, you know what you wanna do. Does any shipmate out there know if the marines have a type of transition course for enlisted to switch over from another branch? I know the army does, but i would much rather you know... make the right choice. lol

If you've gotten picked up for Marine OCS, that will be your "transition" course. You'll be evaluated on your leadership, physical fitness and academics. There really is no bonafide transition course in OCS, even for prior enlisted Marines who go through it. Everyone is treated and trained the same. If you're making an enlisted to enlisted transition, you will attend Marine Corps Boot Camp the whole twelve weeks, no exceptions! There's no way around any of the above. Have you been accepted into Marine OCS? |

I have to finish my degree. To tell you the truth, wx it is for the right reason or not. THe only reason im looking into it is because i do not want to take a pay but and lose my rank switching to another service. I mean if there was a way I can transfer over from a SEA going service that I am enlisted into right now, and go into the Marine Corps leeping my time and rank, I will definatly take that over O.C.S. Even if i have to attend 12 weeks of Boot all over again. I've been through it once not a problem going twice. Other than that my O.C.S packet is pretty much complete and almost ready to submit when my enlistment is up.

just stick with the officer route.
you've been enlisted one way or another and when you get your degree, you should actually make sure it serves you some purpose. If you took the time to get it, you might as well reap the benefits of that effort and go officer. quite frankly i don't understand it when enlisted personnel get their degree and don't try the officer route. |

Well, contrary to popular belief, the "grass is NOT always greener" on the officer side. I use to not understand it myself until I became an officer. While the pay, rank, prestige and better privileges are enticing, it's not all about that. Besides, getting that degree isn't all about getting a "higher position" or "better pay" it's about expanding your mind and your knowledge. |

Well, you have to ask yourself why you want to be an officer. Having the ability and/or desire to lead must be one of your MAIN reasons. Otherwise, you need not go to OCS. You will lose rank/pay if you enlist in the Marine Corps. You may gain it back quicker than your new Marine enlisted peers (because of TIS), but bottom line is, you will start as an E-2 if you enlist into the Corps as a PS Ap. There is no "back door" entry into the Corps. If you think you can lead Marines, then by all means, go for OCS so you don't have to re-start as an E-2 (though you will still be "starting over" as a Boot Lt.! If not, enlist in another service and hope you don't have to lose rank (that's dependent on the service and what their needs are). Good luck! |

I would say you are absolutely correct, it is about responsibility and leadership. Corny as it may sound. Of course that is just my opinion since I am not an O. My thoughts on it, are that if you are going to play the military game then you might as well get the most out of it. I'll stay away from the internal politics that I hear get involved . |

That's no exaggeration either! Especially in the "O" side. |

Your all right. I just do not want to be behind a desk pushing papers. I want to be on the lines. out in the mud and heat.

I second Jagges' recommendation about www.marineocs.com. They have tons of information about OCS, TBS, and life afterwards.
There are a number of Lieutenants poking around the site who are currently at TBS or in the FMF in a variety of MOS's. Just be sure to follow forum SOP and post an introduction. |

Unfortunately, every officer will have to do that (eventually) if they want to stick around and move up. It's the nature of the beast. |

admin stuff is just part of the job.
Think of it as field appreciation work. Every time you have to spend a day just doing paperwork, it just makes you appreciate the field that much more. Even the enlisted don't spend every day in the field. |
